Having introduced the latest-generation Outback for the 2005 model year, Subaru continues to refine the Outback lineup for 2006, adding four new models, increased performance, and new feature content. The Outback 2.5i and Limited models receive a fresh four-cylinder engine that now boasts 175 hp, as well as 17-inch wheels. The Outback 2.5i wagon with Navigation System is new and also adds dual-zone automatic climate control and a 6-disc, in-dash CD changer; the new Outback 2.5i Limited Sedan offers all of the luxury amenities of the 2.5i Limited Wagon in a sport sedan package; the fresh Outback 3.0 R Wagon is the third six-cylinder model in the line; the Outback 3.0 R L.L.Bean Edition Sedan replaces the discontinued Outback 3.0 R Sedan and joins the L.L.Bean Edition Wagon. In addition, all Outbacks receive in-cabin air filtration.
Subaru's midsize Outback sedan and wagon has been a mainstay in the automaker's lineup since 1995, with upscale appointments and offering the security of all-wheel drive. The 2006 Outback comes in wagon or sedan body styles and seven trim levels. Three powertrains are offered: a normally aspirated, 2.5L, horizontally opposed four cylinder developing 175 hp (Outback 2.5i and 2.5i Limited); a turbocharged version of the same H-4 producing 250 hp (Outback 2.5XT and XT Limited); and a normally aspirated, 3.0L, flat six-cylinder engine making 250 hp (Outback 3.0 R, L.L. Bean, and VDC models). Outback 2.5i and XT models come with a 5-speed manual transmission, with a 4-speed automatic optionally available. All other Outback models come standard with the automatic shifter.
Key standard features on 2.5i models include an eight-way power driver's seat, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 120-watt AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player and six speakers, air conditioning with an air filtration system, carpeted floor mats, a combination digital clock/trip computer including outside temperature display, cruise control, power windows with driver's auto-down feature, and illuminated window switches. The 2.5i Navigation model adds a 6-disc, in-dash CD changer, body-color door handles, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, and a DVD-based navigation system. Opting for the 2.5i Limited adds a black leather-wrapped steering wheel, shifter handle and parking brake handle, a dual-panel power moonroof (single panel for 2.5i Limited Sedan), and leather-trimmed upholstery. The Outback 3.0 R Wagon also receives folding, body-color exterior mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, a front bumper under-guard, and a tire pressure-monitoring system.
Standard features on the Outback 2.5 XT Limited, Outback 3.0 R L.L.Bean Edition, and 3.0 R VDC Limited models include a four-way power passenger seat with manually adjustable lumbar, a MOMO-brand mahogany wood/black leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls (3.0 R L.L.Bean Edition and VDC Limited), a premium, 160-watt audio system with upgraded speakers, MP3 capability and subwoofer, and a HomeLink remote control system. Safety features on all Outback models include dual front air bags with a driver's-seat position sensor and front-passenger-seat occupant detector, side-impact air bags, seat belt pre-tensioners, ABS-assisted brakes, and daytime running lights. A tire pressure-monitoring system is also standard on the Outback R, and the flagship VDC model gets a vehicle stability system.
The Subaru Outback competes in the Midsize Conventional segment, a group of 19 mainstream models that includes the best-selling car models in the U.S. Buyers in this segment look for value and modern safety features in a midsize package.
According to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM the segment leader for 2005 was the Toyota Camry with 376,803 sales, followed by the Honda Accord (369,293 units sold), Nissan Altima (255,371), and Chevrolet Malibu (245,861). The Outback and sister Subaru Legacy sold a combined 87,788 units to rank ninth in segment sales for calendar year 2005. Other top sellers in the segment include the Ford Taurus, Hyundai Sonata, Pontiac G6, Buick LaCrosse, and Chrysler Sebring Sedan and Convertible.
