The 2015 Subaru Legacy competes in the midsize sedan class, but by official EPA measurements is roomy enough to qualify as a large sedan. Primary competitors include the Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
The Legacy 2.5i is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine and is offered in standard, Premium, and Limited trim levels. The Legacy 3.6R has a 6-cylinder engine and comes only in Limited trim.

Premium trim adds a 10-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, automatic operation for the front windows, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an upgraded infotainment system (see details below). Heated side mirrors and a wiper de-icer system make the Legacy Premium ready for cold weather, and this version also gets 17-in. aluminum wheels.

Limited versions include larger 18-in. aluminum wheels, fog lights, integrated turn signal indicators in the side mirrors, and a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-change alert features. Inside, the Limited is equipped with leather seats, a 10-way power front passenger's seat, heated rear seats, matte-finish woodgrain cabin trim, and a premium audio system.

Under the Hood
A 175-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard in the Legacy 2.5i, while the Legacy 3.6R is packed with a 256-horsepower, 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine. For 2015, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard with both engines, offering a 6-speed manual shifting mode and paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Subaru's Active Torque Split all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is standard on every 2015 Legacy, automatically feeding power to the rear wheels as is necessary. Active Torque Vectoring is new this year, improving the Legacy's cornering capability, and the standard braking package is upgraded for 2015, now offering enhanced braking capability, according to Subaru. The redesigned Legacy also gets new quick-ratio electric steering.

Fuel Economy
Subaru installs active grille shutters in every version of the 2015 Legacy in order to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. According to the EPA, the 2015 Legacy 2.5i is rated to return 26 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Choose the Legacy 3.6R and the car is expected to get 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Safety and Technology
A new 6.2-in. infotainment touch screen debuts in the base version of the 2015 Legacy, and includes a reversing camera, Bluetooth calling and music streaming, HD Radio, StarLink smartphone integration with Aha technology, access to Pandora and iHeart Radio, USB port, auxiliary audio input jack, iPod control, and more.

Select Premium trim to expand the system's capabilities. The 7-in. screen supports swipe and scrolling gesture control, and this upgraded version features voice-recognition technology, text-messaging support, iTunes tagging capability, satellite radio, and dual USB ports. In Limited trim, it adds a premium 12-speaker sound system.

A navigation system is optional with this larger infotainment setup, and it supports natural-language voice control, which can also be used to operate the dual-zone automatic climate system.

New for 2015, the Rear Vehicle Detection System features a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert. It includes a lane-change assist system that warns the driver when he or she activates the turn signal to indicate a lane change, if traffic in adjacent lanes might be approaching at a rapid rate of speed. This system is standard for Legacy Limited vehicles, and is optional for the Legacy 2.5i Premium.

The Limited version of the 2015 Legacy also includes a Keyless Access & Start system with PIN Code Access. Using this technology, the Legacy's owner could lock the key fob in the car and then use a PIN code to unlock the doors upon return, making it unnecessary to take the key fob out of the vehicle.

Next-generation EyeSight technology is optional for the Legacy Premium and Limited trim levels. It includes updated camera technology that operates the adaptive cruise control with pre-collision braking and lane-departure warning systems. For 2015, EyeSight adds new steering-responsive fog lights designed to help the driver see around turns.
