Introduction
The 2014 Subaru Legacy is a midsize family sedan equipped with standard all-wheel drive (AWD). It competes in one of the toughest segments of the market, battling the Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
Two model series are offered within the Legacy lineup. The Legacy 2.5i is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine, while the Legacy 3.6R has a 6-cylinder engine. Subaru employs a horizontally opposed engine design, also known as "boxer" or "flat" engines. Within the Legacy 2.5i series, the car is available in base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trim levels. The Legacy 3.6R is offered only in Limited trim for the 2014 model year.

Upgrading to Premium trim adds a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters, 17-inch aluminum wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 10-way power driver's seat, 4.3-inch touch-screen audio system with satellite radio and additional speakers, and an All-Weather package containing heated side mirrors, wiper de-icer grid, and heated front seats. The Legacy 2.5i Sport, which arrived mid-way through the 2013 model year, adds larger 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, and a power sunroof.

Select 2.5i Limited trim, which builds upon the 2.5i Premium model, and the Legacy is equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control, perforated leather upholstery, power front passenger's seat, premium audio system, and fog lights. The Limited also gets rear air conditioning vents, upgraded interior trim including dark woodgrain panels, and an electroluminescent gauge display.

The 3.6R Limited is equipped with a 6-cylinder engine, 5-speed automatic transmission with downshift rev-matching, Variable Torque Distribution AWD, dual exhaust outlets, larger ventilated front and rear brakes, and aluminum doorsill plates.

Options and Packages
Any 2014 Legacy can be upgraded with numerous dealer accessories to personalize the car, an approach that some buyers might find necessary due to the limited number of factory options offered for this model. For example, the standard Legacy 2.5i is offered with a CVT with paddle shifters, and once that transmission is selected, the car can be upgraded with 17-inch aluminum wheels and fog lights.

The 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited are offered with a reversing camera, upgraded sound system with HD Radio and Bluetooth music streaming, power sunroof, navigation system, and Subaru's EyeSight System with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and pre-collision braking systems. A navigation system is also available for the 2.5i Sport model.

Under the Hood
The Legacy 2.5i is equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine rated to make 173 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 174 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,100 rpm. It is available in a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) state of tune at extra cost to the buyer.

A 6-speed manual transmission is standard for the base Legacy 2.5i, while Premium, Sport, and Limited trim levels include a CVT with a manual shift mode and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. All-wheel-drive is standard, featuring a 50:50 front-to-rear power split with the manual transmission and an Active Torque Split system is included with the CVT. The Active Torque Split system automatically transfers engine power to the rear wheels when the front wheels slip.

The Legacy 3.6R is equipped with a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder boxer engine generating 256 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 247 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. A 5-speed automatic transmission with downshift rev-matching is standard, and this model gets a Variable Torque Distribution AWD system.

Fuel Economy
As this overview is written, the EPA has officially rated only the Legacy 2.5i with the CVT, which is expected to get 24 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg in combined driving.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the 2014 Legacy's crashworthiness. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the 2014 Legacy, and gives the car its highest rating of "Top Safety Pick Plus." That rating reflects the Legacy's "Acceptable" rating in the difficult new small overlap frontal-impact crash test.

For 2014, Subaru trickles down safety options for the Legacy. Upgrades previously reserved for the Limited trim level are now optional for the Premium versions of the car: a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and a lane-departure warning system.
