What's New for 2014:

  • Infotainment system
  • Limited trim level gains standard rearview camera

Introduction
The 2014 Subaru Impreza is a small all-wheel-drive (AWD) car available in 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback body styles powered by a single 4-cylinder engine. Five trim levels are offered (once included under the Impreza banner, the high-performance WRX and WRX STI are now distinct models). Competitors include the Chevrolet Cruze, Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, and Volkswagen Golf.

Models and Features
Serving as the lineup's entry-level model, the 2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i sedan covers the basics with its standard 15-in. steel wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and auxiliary input jacks, height-adjustable driver's seat, power outside mirrors, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Hatchback versions add a rear wiper and spoiler. One step up from the 2.0i is the 2.0i Premium, which is upgraded with 16-in. alloy wheels, cruise control, heated front seats and mirrors (requires manual transmission), and an extra pair of speakers.

Buyers who want to experience a broader variety of amenities may be more inclined to check out the Impreza 2.0i Limited. This is where Subaru has added a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters, 17-in. alloy wheels, rearview camera, leather interior trim, fog lights, automatic climate control, and an audio system featuring iTunes tagging capability.

Next are two trim levels reserved exclusively for the 2014 Impreza 5-door hatchback. These include the 2.0i Sport Premium and 2.0i Sport Limited, both distinguished by unique 17-in. alloy wheels, rocker panel skirt, distinct upholstery, and black roof rails.

Options and Packages
In addition to the CVT, options for the 2014 Impreza run the gamut, from a power tilt/slide moonroof to a 6.1-in. touch-screen navigation system that offers smartphone integration, voice command, Bluetooth streaming audio, text message capability, HD Radio service, and more.

Under the Hood
Though they differ in terms of standard equipment, all trim levels of the 2014 Subaru Imprezas are equipped with the same 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Boxer-style engine that produces 148 horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. Transmission choices include the afore-mentioned CVT as well as a 5-speed manual, with output being directed to the ground via a standard AWD system that includes a locking center differential.

Fuel Economy
Efficiency-minded shoppers considering the 2014 Subaru Impreza will be more satisfied by CVT-equipped models, which according to the EPA, should average 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Those who opt for a sedan fitted with the manual transmission can expect to see 25 mpg around town and up to 34 mpg on the freeway (the Impreza hatchback comes in just a bit lower with a 33-mpg rating).

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Subaru Impreza received an overall rating of 5 (out of 5) stars. In tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Impreza received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--in all categories; the 2014 Impreza was also named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute.

Among this Subaru's safety features are 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, 7 air bags, front active head restraints, and the available rearview camera.
