Introduction
The 2014 Subaru Impreza WRX is a performance-tuned version of the previous-generation Impreza model. It competes against a range of compact cars with a similar fun-to-drive mission, including the Ford Focus ST, Honda Civic Si, Kia Forte SX 5-door, Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Volkswagen Jetta GLI, and the Volkswagen GTI.

Models and Features
Subaru Impreza WRX and Impreza WRX STI model series are each offered as a 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback. Within the WRX lineup, standard, Premium, and Limited trim levels are available. The WRX STI is offered only with standard or Limited trim.

Highlights from the standard equipment list include a turbocharged engine, all-wheel-drive (AWD), a 5-speed manual gearbox, sport suspension, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and summer performance tires. Performance-bolstered front seats are also standard, along with automatic climate control, satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming capability. The 5-door model is also equipped with a roof-mounted rear spoiler, cargo cover, and grocery bag hooks in the cargo area.

The WRX Premium adds fog lights, a power sunroof, and an All-Weather package with heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer system. Sedan models also get a trunk spoiler. Select the WRX Limited and the car is equipped with HID headlights and leather seats.

The WRX STI is equipped with a more powerful engine, a 6-speed manual transmission, performance suspension with inverted front struts, performance brakes with Super Sport ABS, bigger wheels and stickier tires, and Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) technology with a multi-mode traction and stability control system. The STI variant also provides a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) AWD system with multiple driving modes, and includes the All-Weather package, Alcantara upholstery, and HID headlights as standard equipment. Additionally, the 5-door version has forged aluminum wheels and fog lights, while the WRX STI Sedan is equipped with a towering rear spoiler.

The WRX STI Sedan can be equipped with Limited trim, which adds leather seats, a power sunroof, fog lights, and forged aluminum wheels.

Options and Packages
Subaru offers a navigation system for the WRX Limited, WRX STI, and the WRX STI Limited. It includes a 6.1-inch color touch-screen infotainment system with Aha smartphone integration technology, voice-control system, text-messaging capability, HD Radio, USB port, auxiliary audio input jack, and iTunes song tagging.

Subaru dealers install additional upgrades for the WRX, and the list of extra-cost equipment is a long one, totaling up to 75 different accessories.

Under the Hood
The Impreza WRX has a turbocharged and intercooled, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated to make 265 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. A 5-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission offered, and the WRX is equipped with an AWD system that employs a viscous coupling locking center differential to evenly distribute power between the front and rear wheels under normal driving conditions.

A more powerful version of this engine is installed in the WRX STI, generating 305 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 290 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm. This model has a 6-speed manual transmission and an AWD system equipped with a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), limited-slip helical front differential, and a Torsen locking rear differential. With this powertrain, 59% of the engine's power flows to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions, according to Subaru.

Fuel Economy
The EPA estimates that the Impreza WRX will get 19 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg in combined driving. The more powerful WRX STI is rated to return 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg in combined driving. Both versions require premium gas.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Subaru engineered the Impreza WRX with a Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame, which is designed to deflect crash energy away from the passenger compartment in a collision. However, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has assessed the 2014 Subaru Impreza WRX for crash protection.
