The 2012 Subaru Forester is an all-wheel-drive compact crossover with seating for 5 passengers. The Forester is offered in six trim levels: 2.5X, 2.5X Premium, 2.5X Limited, 2.5X Touring, 2.5XT Premium, and 2.5XT Touring.
Standard features on the Subaru Forester 2.5X models include cloth upholstery, some power accessories, air conditioning, automatic headlights, 16-inch steel wheels, adjustable front seats, and a 4-speaker sound system. The 2.5X Premium trim adds lumbar support, sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, and more. The 2.5X Limited features automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and an upgraded audio system. The 2.5X Touring trim adds bi-Xenon headlights, dual-zone climate control, rearview camera, and other electronic upgrades. The 2.5XT Premium and 2.5XT Touring trims offer similar equipment and add a turbocharged engine. The Forester provides 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and 68.3 cubic feet with seats folded down.
A dash-mounted navigation system with touch-screen interface is optional on the Subaru Forester Limited trims. Many of the upgrades on upper trims are available as packages on lower trims. Satellite radio and various exterior embellishments are available as stand-alone options.
Under the Hood
The standard power plant on all Forester 2.5X models is a 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine rated at 170 horsepower. The XT trims upgrade to a turbocharged engine rated at 224 horsepower. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the base trim, with a 4-speed automatic optional. The automatic transmission is the only gearbox offered with the premium turbocharged models. All-wheel drive is standard.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Subaru Forester are:
- Forester with standard engine: 21/27/23 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- Forester with turbocharged engine: 19/24/21 mpg
Standard safety features on the 2012 Subaru Forester include anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, front-seat side air bags, and rear-seat side curtain air bags.
In government tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Forester received 4 (out of 5) stars for frontal-offset crash protection and 3 stars for side-impact protection. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Forester received "Good" ratings--the Institute's highest--for all crash tests.
