Overview

The Subaru Forester is a four-door crossover station wagon. First introduced in 1997, the Forester is now in its third generation, last completely redesigned for the 2008 model year. Subaru has dropped a new engine under the hood for 2011, which offers increased power and improved fuel economy. In addition, there are two new trim levels and new equipment. Lastly, Bluetooth phone connectivity has been added as standard equipment to all models, except for the entry-level 2.5X trim level.

Subaru's Forester is offered in six different trim levels. Standard 2.5X models are fitted with cloth upholstery, full power accessories, air conditioning, automatic headlamps, 16-inch steel wheels, and more. The 2.5X Premium models adds equipment such as a power driver's seat, lumbar support, moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, and more.

The 2.5X Limited gains features including automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and an upgraded audio system. All 2.5X Touring models are differentiated by their standard xenon headlamps, dual-zone climate control and a rearview camera. The two XT models offer similar equipment breakdowns, but are fitted with the more powerful turbocharged engine.

Under the hood of the five-passenger wagon is 2.5-liter horizontally opposed, four-cylinder engine rated at 170 horsepower - the engine is standard on all 2.5X models. Upgraded XT trim levels feature a turbocharged variant that develops 224 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on base models, with a four-speed automatic optional. The automatic is the only gearbox offered with the premium turbocharged models. All-wheel drive, a Subaru signature driveline, is standard.

When it comes to fuel economy, the EPA rates the 2011 Subaru Forester between 19 mpg city, and 27 mpg highway, depending on engine and transmission.

The 2011 Subaru Forester 2.5X starts with a base price of about $21,000 and tops out with the 2.5XT Touring model, which starts around $30,500.
