Overview

What's New for 2013:

  • 2+2 sport coupe
  • BRZ is the only rear-wheel-drive Subaru

Exterior Features
The 2-door, 4-passenger, 2013 Subaru BRZ sports coupe debuts with a choice of two trim levels: the base Premium and the upgraded Limited. The Premium comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in summer performance tires, and bi-xenon headlights with LED running lights. Get the Limited and the BRZ is equipped with a rear spoiler and fog lights.

The Subaru BRZ was developed in conjunction with Toyota and is nearly identical to the Scion FR-S. Subtle styling and slight content differences differentiate the two models. The trunk provides 6.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

Interior Features
The BRZ Premium includes cloth sport seats, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, and floor mats. An 8-speaker sound system includes an auxiliary audio input jack, USB port, full iPod control, iTunes tagging, satellite radio, and HD Radio. A voice-activated navigation system is also standard, and includes traffic information, Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming, and hands-free text messaging.

Upgrading to the BRZ Limited adds leather seats with Alcantara suede inserts, keyless entry and push-button starting, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and heated side mirrors.

Optional Features
Aside from dealer-installed accessories, the only option on the Subaru BRZ is an automatic transmission.

Under the Hood
A horizontally opposed, direct- and port-injected, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is the only power plant offered for the BRZ. It produces 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,400 rpm, and comes with a close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox. A 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is available, and includes a Sport shifting program as well as downshift rev matching. All BRZs have a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, and unlike the rest of Subaru's all-wheel-drive lineup, the BRZ is rear-wheel drive.

The engine's position within the car helps the BRZ achieve a front-to-rear weight distribution of 53:47, and Subaru says the BRZ has one of the lowest centers of gravity of any production car. The company also claims that the BRZ is the lightest 2+2 sports car in America, with a curb weight of 2,762 pounds.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Subaru BRZ are:
  • BRZ with manual transmission: 22/30/25 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • BRZ with automatic transmission: 25/34/28 mpg

Safety
The 2013 Subaru BRZ is equipped with 6 air bags, traction and stability control, and 4-wheel ventilated-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and brake override features.

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 BRZ as this overview is written.
