What Changed for 2008:

  • The Scion xD is an all-new model

  • Joins xA, xB and tC in Scion's lineup
Overview
A brand-new model for 2008, the Scion xD is a 5-door "urban subcompact" hatchback. Essentially a 5-door version of the Toyota Yaris, but offering a larger and more powerful engine, the xD features a spacious and refined interior with a long list of standard features. Standard 16-inch wheels, mounted on a short and wide frame, make for ease of handling and fuel efficiency, according to Scion.

Model Lineup
Convenience, utility and comfort are the words the company uses to describe the interior of the new 2008 Scion xD. A one-model lineup, with a single standard engine and a choice of manual or automatic transmission, the xD offers standard convenience items including power door locks, power mirrors and power windows with one-touch auto down on the driver's side. Utility is featured through standard 60/40-split folding, reclining, and sliding rear seats and under-floor storage. Comfort is addressed by standard air conditioning, front sport bucket seats, and tilt steering wheel with audio controls.

Audio upgrades include both Sirius and XM satellite radio, a Pioneer Premium audio option, and an optional Scion Navigation system. Interior upgrades add cargo utility, cabin illumination options, and sport shift knobs and pedals. Exterior enhancements include exhaust tips, alloy wheels, LED rear taillights, and an assortment of wheel covers.

Powertrain
The standard powerplant in the 2008 Scion xD is a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder aluminum engine. Horsepower is rated at 128, with a torque rating of 125 lb.-ft. The front-wheel-drive hatchback is offered with a choice between a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. EPA fuel economy estimates are 27 mpg city/33 mpg highway (5-speed manual), and 26 mpg city/32 mpg highway (automatic).

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2008 Scion xD include driver and front passenger frontal air bags, front-seat-mounted side air bags, and rear side curtain air bags. Driver and front passenger seats are equipped with active head restraints, designed to limit whiplash-type injuries in an accident. Front seat belts are fitted with pre-tensioners, engineered to remove slack in seat belts helping to keep occupants in a safer position during a collision. Active safety features include standard 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA). Vehicle stability control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC) and a first aid kit are also standard on all models. As of this writing, the 2008 Scion xD has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
Scion Sound Processing is the name for the standard digital sound processing (DSP) sound equalization system found in the 2008 xD. DSP gives listeners more control of sound from their audio system through digital manipulation. In the case of the Scion, listeners may choose between three pre-set equalizer settings. In addition to DSP, the standard 160-watt, 6-speaker stereo features Scion's Sound Retouch digital equalization for what Scion says is clearer MP3/WMA-CD sound, and iPod capabilities.
