Introduction
The 2015 Scion FR-S is a rear-wheel-drive sports car with a 2+2 seating configuration. There is nothing quite like the FR-S at its starting price point, the closest competitors including the larger Ford Mustang and Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and the front-drive Honda Civic Si Coupe. Subaru, which partnered with Scion to engineer this car, sells a version of the FR-S as the BRZ.

Models and Features
Like all Scion models, the FR-S is offered in what is called mono-spec format. In other words, everything is standard except for dealer-installed extras. Among the available upgrades is a navigation system and Aha connectivity and services. A number of performance-enhancing additions are also available through the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) catalog.

Under the Hood
A Subaru-sourced, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine sits beneath the Scion FR-S's low hood, a boxer-type design that helps to lower the car's center of gravity. It makes 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,600 rpm, and is charged with motivating 2,758 lbs.

A 6-speed manual gearbox channels power through the car's rear wheels. As an option, buyers can select a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management technology. Scion includes free scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles of FR-S ownership.

Fuel Economy
One reason to upgrade to the automatic transmission is to improve the FR-S's fuel economy. With the standard manual gearbox, the EPA rates this car to return 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Select the automatic transmission and those figures climb to 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway.

Safety and Technology
Aside from Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming through a touch-screen audio system with HD Radio and a USB port, the Scion FR-S is a relatively basic vehicle. Buyers can opt for a navigation system and Aha service access to more than 30,000 global sources of audio content, including audio books, magazines, podcasts, and more.
