Exterior FeaturesThe Scion FR-S is an all-new sporty car entry, developed in conjunction with the new Subaru BRZ. According to Scion, its name stands for Front-engine, Rear-drive, Sport. Like other Scion models, the new 2013 FR-S is sold in a single level of trim that, on this model, includes 17-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in performance tires, power exterior mirrors, auto-off headlights, and LED taillights. The FR-S's coefficient of drag is a remarkably low 0.27 cd, according to Scion.
Interior FeaturesStandard equipment for the 4-passenger Scion FR-S includes air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, height-adjustable driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with a shift knob, floor mats, and cruise control. A 300-watt Pioneer audio system is also included, and features Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, USB/iPod connection, auxiliary audio input jack, RCA output jacks, and HD radio. The Scion FR-S also features a center-mounted tachometer with a programmable rev indicator, both digital and analog speedometers, and aluminum pedals.
Optional FeaturesSeveral dealer-installed accessories are available for the 2013 Scion FR-S, including fog lights, carpeted trunk mat, mudguards, and a rear spoiler. Also optional is a BeSpoke premium audio system that includes an LCD color touch screen, multi-media connectivity through a special app, Pandora Internet radio, and iTunes tagging capability.
Scion dealers can also equip the FR-S with several performance-oriented features, such as 18-inch aluminum wheels, braking and suspension component upgrades, cold-air intake, and a sport exhaust system.
Under the HoodA Subaru-sourced, horizontally opposed, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine powers the 2,758-pound Scion FR-S. It provides 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb.-ft. of torque between 6,400 and 6,600 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox delivers power to the rear wheels. Optional is a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management.
Fuel EconomyEPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Scion FR-S are:
- FR-S with manual transmission: 22/30/25 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- FR-S with automatic transmission: 25/34/28 mpg
SafetyThe 2013 Scion FR-S is equipped with 6 air bags, 4-wheel ventilated-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and a traction and stability control system. The FR-S also includes Smart Stop technology, which means that it cannot accelerate if the brake pedal is depressed, the company claims.
As this overview was written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had performed crash tests on the 2013 Scion FR-S.
