A new hybrid model is added to the Vue lineup for 2007. Called the Green Line, it represents General Motors' first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle offered to the general public. The regular Vue underwent major changes in 2006, so new items for 2007 are limited to paint, 16- and 17-inch wheels, standard OnStar, and the availability of XM Satellite Radio and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.
Saturn entered the sport utility vehicle (SUV) market with the debut of the Vue in 2002. Although it is based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent, Saturn's 5-passenger compact SUV set out to differentiate itself from the competition by offering dent-resistant and rust-proof polymer body panels, a choice of 4- and 6-cylinder engines, and more than one transmission. Saturn added the sporty Red Line series to the Vue lineup in 2004 and now it has rolled out the new Green Line hybrid for 2007. Front- (FWD) and all-wheel drive are offered on the Vue and Vue Red Line, but the Green Line is limited to FWD.
The Green Line hybrid uses an electric motor/generator coupeed to a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed transmission. This unique powertrain provides additional power from the motor/generator during acceleration and saves fuel (an estimated 20 percent improvement) through engine shut-off at idle and fuel cut-off during deceleration. It also captures electrical energy through regenerative braking. The engine develops 170 hp, which is a substantial increase over the 143 hp provided by the gasoline-only 2.2-liter engine in the conventional 4-cylinder Vue. The conventional Vue also offers a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 248 hp and ups the towing capacity from 1,500 pounds to 3,500.
The sporty Red Line comes standard with the zippier 3.5-liter V-6 mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. To further enhance its zesty performance, the Red Line has been lowered more than one inch, has a stiffened suspension system, and rides on 18-inch aluminum wheels with performance touring tires.
The Vue offers an assortment of safety features such as OnStar, dual-stage frontal air bags, and an available head curtain air bag system. Standard on all Vue models are cruise control; remote keyless entry; a security system; and power windows, locks, and mirrors.
The Saturn Vue competes in the Compact Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment, which consists of 20 models. Buyers in this segment look for fuel economy, reliability, and comfort, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the Honda CR-V (170,028 units sold), Ford Escape (157,395), and Toyota RAV4 (152,047). The Saturn Vue sold 88,581 units in 2006, a decrease of 3.7 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Compact CUV segment include the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Chevrolet Equinox and HHR, Scion xB , and Hyundai Tucson. Joining the segment in 2007 are two Jeep models-the Compass and Patriot-and the Kia Rondo.
