  • Three new exterior colors
Overview
The first Saturn model to wear the brand's new face, the 2009 Sky rear-wheel-drive (RWD), 2-seat roadster returns as a carryover model, but adds three new exterior colors, a new wheel design, and enhanced OnStar service with Bluetooth hands-free telephone connectivity. In addition, two new promotional packages are added: Ruby Red Limited Edition and Hydro Blue Limited Edition, both of which include a new split-spoke wheel design. The Sky, which shares its platform with the Pontiac Solstice, competes against the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Honda S2000.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Saturn Sky is available in base Sky and performance-oriented Sky Red Line models, both with a standard manual transmission; a 5-speed automatic transmission is optional on both models. Standard equipment on the Sky and Sky Red Line includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel (with leather shift knob included with premium trim package on the manual-equipped 2.4-liter model and standard on the manual-equipped Sky Red Line); air conditioning; remote keyless entry; power windows, door locks and mirrors; reclining bucket seats; cloth convertible top with power controls; 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS); and a limited-slip differential (optional on Sky, standard on Red Line).

The standard Sky model comes with a 173-hp, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and new 18-inch, 5-spoke, painted aluminum alloy wheels. Sky options include 18-inch polished or chrome-plated wheels, performance exhaust system, and a rear spoiler. The Premium trim package (Sky only) includes Bluetooth wireless connectivity, leather seat surfaces and trim, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, metallic sill plates, and stainless steel pedal covers.

The Sky Red Line, with its 260-hp, Ecotec, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, features unique interior and exterior differences versus the Sky roadster. These include dual polished aluminum exhaust outlets, black bezels on the headlamps, front lower fascia with functional brake cooling vents and larger mesh pattern in the lower grille (for improved air flow, says Saturn), and 18-inch polished aluminum alloy wheels. On the inside, the Sky Red Line has a leather shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, metallic sill plates, stainless steel pedal covers, digital boost gauge included in the Driver Information Center, and Red Line-specific gauges. Red Line options include an automatic transmission, performance exhaust, 18-inch chrome-finish wheels, rear spoiler, Red Line embroidery, and leather seat trim.

Other options for both Sky and Sky Red Line include a new-for-2009 (interim model year) radio with a USB port on the face plate that can interface with an iPod or other portable storage device. An optional Weekend Getaway package includes all-weather floor mats, cargo compartment, console and wind deflector storage bags, mud guards, and a wind deflector.

Powertrain
For 2009, the Saturn Sky is powered by a 2.4-liter, Ecotec, dual-overhead cam (DOHC) 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing (VVT), producing 173 hp at 5800 rpm and 167 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. The Sky Red Line gets its power from a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, Ecotec, DOHC 4-cylinder engine that delivers 260 hp at 5300 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 2500-5250 rpm. Both engines transfer power to the rear wheels through the standard Aisin 5-speed manual transmission, with a 5-speed automatic available. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2.4-liter engine are 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway with manual transmission, and 19 mpg city/24 mpg highway in automatic configuration. The 2.0-liter engine in the Sky Red Line gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway (manual) and 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway (automatic).

Electronic stability control and 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and dynamic rear proportioning are standard on all 2009 Saturn Sky models. A limited-slip differential is standard on Red Line models and available on the base Sky. The Sky's suspension features forged-aluminum control arms, Bilstein monotube shocks and hollow stabilizer bars with ball joint sockets. The Sky Red Line features additional hardware, including a performance-tuned suspension.

Safety
Safety features on the 2009 Saturn Sky include 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS; dual-stage front air bags for driver and front passenger with passenger-sensing system; front safety belts with pre-tensioners and energy-absorbing retractors; electronic stability control; projector-beam headlamps; tire-pressure monitor; daytime running lamps; remote keyless entry with panic alarm; engine immobilizer; and OnStar free for one year.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Saturn Sky convertible receives a 4-star rating for both occupants in frontal and side-impact crash tests. In NHTSA rollover-resistance testing, the Sky receives a 5-star rating.

Technology
The standard audio system in the 2009 Saturn Sky is a 6-speaker, AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 capability, along with speed-compensated volume, automatic tone control, TheftLock and Radio Data System. An optional Monsoon 225-watt, 7-speaker system is available. New for 2009, and available mid-model year, is a new radio that includes a USB port on the face plate that can interface with an iPod or other mass storage device. OnStar 8.0 on Saturn Sky models includes Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free calling (standard on Red Line and optional on Sky with Premium Trim package).
