The 2009 Saturn Outlook is carryover from 2008
, but undergoes a host of minor enhancements. The large crossover utility vehicle, designed to look more like an SUV than a wagon or a van, offers 7- or 8-passenger seating and is available in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD). With all seats folded, the Outlook has 116.9 cubic feet of cargo space. For 2009, Saturn
adds a new 3.6-liter, dual-overhead cam (DOHC) V-6 engine; increases towing capacity to 5200 pounds; adds standard leather appointments to the XR; offers a new base cloth upholstery on XE models; a new Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround system with DVD and 9 speakers; and two new exterior colors: Quicksilver and Silver Moss.Model Lineup
The 2009 Saturn Outlook is available in two models-XE and XR-in either FWD or AWD. Standard equipment includes a 6-speed automatic transmission, new base cloth upholstery on XE, leather standard on XR (and available on XE), chrome door handles, and 18-inch alloy wheels (with 20-inch wheels available). The Outlook can be configured for 7- or 8-passenger seating, including two front bucket seats, 60/40-split second-row bench (seating 3 passengers) or two captain's chairs in the second row and 60/40-split third-row bench seat. With the second and third rows folded flat, the Outlook has 116.9 cubic feet of cargo room. The second-row seats feature Saturn's Smart Slide, for quick and easy access to third-row seats. The one-hand operation flips up the second-row seat and slides the seatback forward. The second-row seats also offer fore/aft adjustable positioning.
Options on the 2009 Saturn Outlook include leather seats (on XE); second-row console for captain's chair seating configuration; fixed rear skylight separate from the front moonroof; power liftgate; remote vehicle start; 20-inch alloy wheels; two Bose audio systems; DVD video system; and a navigation system. The Preferred package, available on XE models, now adds body-color, heated outside rearview mirrors and turn-signal repeaters, and body-color bodyside moldings. A Touring package (available mid-model year) includes rear fascias with exhaust cutouts and new 20-inch alloy wheels. When equipped with the optional factory trailering package with Class III hitch and required wiring, along with enhanced powertrain cooling, the 2009 Outlook can tow 5200 pounds, an increase of 700 pounds from previous model years.Powertrain
The 2009 Saturn Outlook is powered by a new, 3.6-liter, DOHC V-6 engine with variable valve timing (VVT) and direct injection that delivers 288 hp at 6400 rpm and 270 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 rpm (in AWD XR) and 281 hp at 6400 rpm and 253 lb.-ft. of torque at 5500 rpm (in FWD XE). Both engines are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with clutch-to-clutch shift operation. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the FWD Outlook are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway, while the AWD model gets an estimated 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway.
Riding on a long, 118.9-inch wheelbase, the Saturn Outlook has a front independent suspension featuring a MacPherson strut design, while the rear independent suspension is a compact, state-of-the-art linked "H" design. The Outlook's Active On Demand AWD system works by actively managing torque split between front/rear axles, with inputs from vehicle speed, throttle and surface conditions. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS) with Panic Brake Assist, traction control, and electronic stability control are standard, while rear parking assist is optional.Safety
The 2009 Saturn Outlook features six standard air bags: two dual-stage frontal air bags for the driver and front passenger, two seat-mounted side-impact air bags in the front row, and two head curtain side air bags that cover all three seating rows. GM's rollover-sensing system complements the air bags. Electronic stability control, ABS with Panic Brake Assist technology, daytime running lamps, and OnStar 7.2 with one-year Safe & Sound plan are also standard.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
), the Saturn Outlook receives perfect 5-star ratings for all occupants in frontal and side-impact crash tests. In NHTSA rollover-resistance testing, the Outlook receives a 4-star rating for FWD and AWD. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS
) has named the Saturn Outlook (along with sister nameplates, GMC Acadia
, Buick Enclave
and Chevy Traverse
) as a 2009 "Top Safety Pick." The achievement comes as a result of the SUV's outstanding performance in the Institute's front-, side- and rear-impact crash tests, and the fact that the vehicle has standard electronic stability control.Technology
New for 2009, the Saturn Outlook offers OnStar 7.2 with Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free calling (the Bluetooth feature is standard on the Outlook XR and available on the XE model with Preferred package). OnStar's Destination Download is compatible with the vehicle's navigation system. Also, the XM real-time traffic display is available on the XR model and is compatible with the navigation system. The standard audio system is a 6-speaker, AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player. There's also a choice of two optional Bose audio systems: a 300-watt, 9-speaker Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround system with DVD (replacing the advanced audio system), or a non-surround Bose audio system. A new-for-2009 backup camera, which does not require the navigation system, is available on all models. In addition, the compass on the XR model moves from the rearview mirror to the driver information center (to accommodate the in-mirror view screen).
