The 2008 Saturn Aura, a 4-door, 5-passenger front-engine, front-wheel-drive midsize family sedan, is basically a carryover design from the 2007 model, but it does have new interior trim and other options, a new 4-cylinder XE model, and a Hybrid model is now available. Key competitors to the Saturn Aura include the (redesigned for 2008) Honda Accord (and Accord Hybrid), Toyota Camry (and Camry Hybrid), Nissan Altima, and Volkswagen Passat (XE and XR). Saturn says the Aura is a critical component of its newly revamped product lineup.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Saturn Aura lineup includes four models: Aura XE-4 and Aura XE-6 (4-cylinder and V-6 engine, respectively); Aura XR; and Aura Green Line Hybrid. While the exterior looks the same as last year's model, the major focus for 2008, according to Saturn, is on interior refinement, combining the use of premium materials with a low-gloss look, tight tolerances, and more attractive upholstery and trim color combinations. A new feature on XE and XR models is the Driver Information Center addition that relays real-time fuel economy information. Standard equipment includes halogen headlamps; LED taillamps; chrome appearance on door handles (XR); 17-inch wheels and tires on the XE; and 18-inch polished 14-spoke cast aluminum wheels and performance tires on the XR. The Aura Green Line Hybrid features standard 16-inch wheels with low rolling-resistance tires. Three new exterior colors are available: Red Jewel Tintcoat, Carbon Flash and Deep Blue. A new feature is self-dimming theater lighting for nighttime.

Optional leather seating includes embossed seat inserts in the premium Ebony/Morocco interior on the XR. Embossed door inserts and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter accents further complement the Morocco Brown seat inserts. The convenience package includes a heated auto-dimming outside mirror.

The 2.4-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder Ecotec engine is the base powerplant in the Aura XE-4 and the Aura Green Line Hybrid. The Ecotec engine in the Aura XE-4 delivers 169 hp at 6400 rpm and 160 ft.-lb. of torque at 4500 rpm. It is mated with a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. In the Aura Green Line Hybrid, the same engine, equipped with the GM Hybrid system, generates 164 hp at 6400 rpm and 159 lb.-ft. of torque at 5000 rpm. The Aura XE-6 is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with variable valve timing (VVT); power is transferred through a 6-speed automatic transmission. This combination delivers 219 hp at 5900 rpm and 219 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm. The Aura XR sedan has the more powerful 3.6-liter V-6 DOHC engine with VVT, generating 252 hp at 6300 rpm and 251 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm with the standard 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2.4-liter engine are 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway, while 3.5-liter V-6 engine figures are 18 mpg city/29 mpg highway. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine gets an estimated 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway. For the Aura Green Line Hybrid, fuel economy estimates are 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway.

Saturn Aura for 2008 includes a comprehensive list of standard and available safety features, including: dual-stage frontal air bags with passenger sensing system; front seat-mounted thorax protection air bags; head-curtain side-impact air bags for all front and rear outboard passengers; safety belt pre-tensioners; Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child safety seat anchors; 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic stability control system; traction control; and one year of OnStar safety and security system with available Turn-by-Turn Navigation capability (the first factory-installed, OnStar fully-integrated global positioning system (GPS). In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2008 Saturn Aura sedan, including the Green Line Hybrid, received a perfect 5-star rating for front and side crash tests for all occupants. The 2008 Saturn Aura 4-door sedan received a 4-star rating in NHTSA rollover tests. The Hybrid, however, was not rated in rollover testing.

All Auras for 2008 include the OnStar safety and security system, with Turn-by-Turn Navigation capability. This system is the first factory-installed, fully integrated GPS from OnStar that allows customers to talk with a live adviser to receive real-time directions played through the vehicle's stereo (as needed) for hands-free help triggered by the GPS. The premium radio family offers consumers a range of audio entertainment choices. Standard radio is a 6-speaker system with auxiliary input jack for portable audio players. An optional advanced audio system includes AM/FM/CD/MP3 radio with 8-speaker sound; 6-disc CD changer; 240-watt amplifier; and rear-seat audio controls. XM satellite radio (with three months of free programming), previously an option, is now standard across the Aura lineup.
