The Ram 2500 and 3500 (formerly Dodge Ram 2500/3500) are parent automaker Chrysler's heavy-duty pickup trucks. They're larger than the Ram 1500, and are available in 2- or 4-wheel drive. These higher-numbered Rams feature a distinctive thrusting grille design, and offer a broad selection of engines, cab styles, and pickup bed sizes. A new trim level has been introduced for 2011, and the list of standard features on all trims is longer. A more powerful version of the turbo-diesel engine will be available late in the model year, according to the automaker.
The 2011 Ram 2500 and 3500 are available with a regular cab (a single row of bench seats that accommodates three riders), crew cab (two benches that seat six), and Mega Cab (the same, but with more leg room in back). The regular and crew models offer a choice of a 76-inch or a 96-inch bed; the Mega Cab has a 76-inch bed. Various trims are available, and they range from very basic to luxurious. Several option packages add power and off-road capabilities. The Ram 3500 model offers a choice of single or dual rear wheels. Payloads top out at 3120 pounds for the 2500 and more than 5000 pounds for the 3500, when properly equipped. The Ram 2500 can tow some 15,000 pounds; the Ram 3500 can tow up to 22,000 pounds, depending on configuration and equipment, according to the manufacturer.
The standard power plant in the 2011 Ram 2500 is a 355-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 engine that produces 395 lb.-ft. of torque, coupeed with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Optional is a 350-horsepower, 6.7-liter, turbo-diesel, inline 6-cylinder engine that delivers 650 lb.-ft. of torque and comes with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. That engine is standard on the Ram 3500, and later in the year its torque production will rise to 800 lb.-ft. The diesel engine includes an exhaust brake.
Standard safety equipment on the 2011 Ram 2500 and 3500 includes anti-lock brakes and side curtain air bags, with trailer brake-control optional.
Starting MSRPs for the 2011 Ram 2500 and 3500 range from $27,975 to around $57,000.
