Exterior Features
The Ram 1500 is a full- pickup truck offered in three cab styles and three bed s. The 1500 is available in either rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD). There are 11 trim levels from which to choose, ranging from the entry level ST to the top-of-the-line Laramie Longhorn, plus 10 optional package/equipment groups.
Interior Features
Outfitted with the regular cab, the 2012 Ram 1500 accommodates up to 3 passengers, while the Quad and Crew cabs seat up to 6. The Crew Cab expands the leg room in the rear seats compared with the Quad Cab. The base model Ram 1500 ST features air conditioning, tilt steering column, vinyl 40/20/40 split-bench front seat, and a 6-speaker sound system with AM/FM stereo and single-disc CD player. Moving up the trim levels adds upgraded leather seating, additional storage compartments, power door locks and windows, dual-zone automatic temperature control, carpeted flooring, and other luxury amenities.
Optional Features
A wide range of options may be added to the 2012 Ram 1500 by selecting a higher trim, one of several package groups, or individual options. The Laramie Longhorn includes such options as a 10-speaker sound system, chrome-tipped dual exhaust, and heated premium leather power seats in both the front and rear. Twenty-two-inch aluminum wheels are fitted on the Sport R/T trim only, while a RamBox cargo management system may be added to any trim model.
Under the Hood
Ram 1500 models are fitted with one of three different engines. Standard on 2WD Quad Cab and regular cab models is a 3.7-liter V-6 engine rated at 215 horsepower. All 4WD and Crew Cab models are equipped with a 4.7-liter V-8 engine rated at 310 horsepower. For several of the top-tier trims, a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine rated at 390 horsepower is standard and also available as an option on all other models. The Hemi engine allows for a maximum towing capacity of 10,450 pounds.
Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2012 Ram 1500 are:- Ram 1500 with V-6 engine: 14/20 mpg (city/highway)
- Ram 1500 with 2WD and 4.7-liter V-8 engine: 14/29 mpg
- Ram 1500 with 4WD and 4.7-liter V-8 engine: 13/18 mpg
- Ram 1500 with 2WD and 5.7-liter V-8 engine: 14/20 mpg
- Ram 1500 with 4WD and 5.7-liter V-8 engine: 13/19 mpg
Safety
Standard safety features of note on the 2012 Ram 1500 include front driver and passenger air bags and knee bolsters, side curtain air bags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and tire-pressure monitoring. A rearview camera is optional.
In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Ram 1500 received 3 (out of 5) stars for overall crash protection. To date, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not tested the 2012 Ram 1500.
