Overview

What's New for 2014:

  • 550-horsepower Turbo S version
  • Platinum Edition variants

Introduction
The 2014 Porsche Cayenne is a 5-passenger, midsize SUV equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD), as well as a host of powertrains and trim levels. This luxurious sport utility offers up to 62.9 cu. ft. of cargo space and competes with the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and X6, Infiniti QX70, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, and the Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

Models and Features
The most basic 2014 Porsche Cayenne--if there is such a thing--is simply named Cayenne, and rolls off the assembly line fitted with standard power front seats with 8-way adjustment, rain-sensing wipers, heated power-adjustable outside mirrors, power tailgate, Bluetooth connectivity, LED daytime running lights and taillights, 7-in. touch-screen audio system, and 18-in. alloy wheels. That content is shared with the Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, and Cayenne Hybrid; new-for-2014 Cayenne and Cayenne Diesel Platinum Editions are upgraded with items including unique color accents and a premium audio system.

Next in the 2014 Cayenne lineup is the GTS model, which features 20-in. alloy wheels, HID headlights, lower body kit, memory settings for the driver, Alcantara and aluminum interior trim, and sport seats for all occupants. Porsche follows the GTS with the Cayenne Turbo, distinguished from lesser trims by way of a standard active suspension setup, adaptive headlights with washers, navigation, and a Bose surround-sound system. The similar Turbo S--another addition for 2014--is the most powerful of all Cayennes.

Options and Packages
Depending on which version of the 2014 Porsche Cayenne is selected, options include a rear-seat entertainment system, Wi-Fi connection, ceramic brakes, self-leveling air suspension, 4-zone climate control, panoramic power tilt/slide moonroof, high-performance chassis, and adaptive front sport seats. HD and satellite radio service are also included among the collection of add-ons.

Under the Hood
While standard and optional features do differentiate the 2014 Porsche Cayenne trim levels, the engines are really what distinguishes them. Starting things off is the base Cayenne, equipped with a direct-injection, 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Output is directed to all four wheels via a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission featuring a start/stop mode.

Another option for Cayenne shoppers is a 3.0-liter V-6 common-rail diesel engine paired with the 8-speed automatic. This combination delivers 240 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. of torque. Efficiency-minded shoppers may also be interested in the Cayenne S Hybrid, which offers an electric mode and uses a supercharged, 3.0-liter V-6, 288-volt electric motor, nickel-metal hydride battery, regenerative brakes, and the automatic gearbox. Collectively, these components generate 380 horsepower and 428 lb.-ft. of torque.

Reflecting a focus on speed rather than fuel economy, the Cayenne S sports a 4.8-liter V-8 engine that creates 400 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. In the GTS, that same engine avails drivers to 420 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, or enough muscle to launch the SUV to 60 mph in only 5.4 seconds, according to Porsche's stopwatch.

If that level of performance doesn't quite cut it, the 2014 Porsche Cayenne Turbo might just do the trick. Under its hood is a twin-turbocharged, 4.8-liter V-8 engine that offers 500 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque, figures that are only bettered by the Turbo S, which produces 550 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft. of torque. That extra muscle helps cut the 0-60 mph time down to a mere 4.3 seconds.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the Cayenne Diesel is the most efficient of all Cayenne models, averaging 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Following in a not-so-close second is the Cayenne S Hybrid, which matches the 20-mpg rating around town but is expected to deliver only 24 mpg on the highway. Most other powertrains hover in the 15-16 mpg range for city driving and 21-23 mpg on the highway, though the Turbo S dips to 14 and 20 mpg, respectively.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Porsche Cayenne.

Porsche equips its largest SUV with 8 air bags, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and a feature it calls engine drag torque control. These amenities are complemented by a rearview camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, blind-spot monitoring system, adaptive brake lights, and intelligent cruise control.
