What's New for 2014:

  • Revised selection of paint colors

The 2014 Porsche Boxster is a 2-passenger, rear-wheel-drive (RWD), mid-engine convertible available in two trim levels: base and S. A GTS variant offering even greater performance has debuted for the 2015 model year (along with its hardtop counterpart, the Cayman GTS). Competitors include the Audi TT, BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, and the Nissan 370Z.

Models and Features
Though it's hard to imagine an entry-level Porsche, that's essentially the role played by the 2014 Boxster base model. Of course, unlike your sparsely equipped Hyundai Accent, this German roadster is fitted with 18-in. alloy wheels wrapped in sticky summer tires, and features a 4-speaker sound system with a 7-in. touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a height-adjustable driver's seat. The list of standard amenities also includes a sport mode that improves throttle response, heated mirrors, automatic extending and retracting rear spoiler, and a power soft top that operates at speeds up to 31 mph, according to Porsche.

In addition to a more powerful engine, the 2014 Porsche Boxster S ups the ante with 19-in. alloy wheels, larger front brake rotors, and HID headlights.

Options and Packages
While it is indeed nicely appointed in its standard configuration, the base Boxster leaves room for plenty of optional upgrades, such as power-folding outside mirrors, heated and cooled power seats with 18-way adjustment, navigation system, surround-sound premium audio with satellite and HD Radio, and dual-zone climate control.

In keeping with its position as a genuine performance car, the Boxster can also be tricked out with a Sport Chrono package comprised of a lap timer, launch control, downshift rev-match, electronic suspension engineered to improve handling, and more.

Under the Hood
For the base 2014 Boxster, Porsche utilizes a direct-injection, 2.7-liter 6-cylinder engine that produces 265 horsepower and 206 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which is directed to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic referred to as PDK (Doppelkupplungsgetriebe).

Those same transmissions are available with the Boxster S, a model that draws its motivation from a 3.4-liter 6-cylinder that generates 315 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque. According to the automaker, the S variant can reach 60 mph in as little as 4.5 seconds.

Fuel Economy
With optimal efficiency in mind, Porsche has equipped the 2014 Boxster with a standard auto start/stop system that may contribute to EPA ratings of 22 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg in mixed driving. Those are estimates for the base variant fitted with the PDK transmission; buyers who select the 6-speed manual should see those figures drop by 2 mpg across the board.

Despite its generous bump in power, the 2014 Boxster S is expected to deliver comparable fuel economy, averaging up to 21 mpg around town and 30 mpg on the highway when the PDK is part of the equation.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Porsche Boxster.

Unlike a number of other models priced in excess of $50,000, the Boxster doesn't carry with it an abundance of cutting-edge safety technologies, but it does feature 4-wheel ABS with ventilated and cross-drilled rotors, 4 air bags, roll bars, and rain-sensing wipers. Among the related options are front and rear park-assist sensors, as well as racing-inspired ceramic composite brakes.
