The Boxster mid-engine roadster adds a stripped-but lighter and more powerful-trim for 2011: the Spyder. A Boxster Black Edition model is also available. Option packages have been slightly rearranged for 2011. The Boxster competes mainly with the Mercedes-Benz SLK and the BMW Z4.
The base 2011 Porsche Boxster features 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, power accessories including a power soft top, partial leather upholstery, and a 4-speaker sound system. The Boxster S trim features a larger, more powerful engine, 18-inch wheels, and an upgraded sound system. Options-packaged and stand-alone-are plentiful on both trims. The buyer has considerable choice of upholstery and interior trim materials, suspension, wheel sizes, and sound systems. The Boxster Black Edition is the S trim but all black, with enhanced standard equipment, including bi-xenon headlights, automatic climate control, navigation system, and upgraded sound system. The Boxster Spyder takes the basic S trim and adds 19-inch wheels, limited-slip differential, sport suspension, and lightweight seats, while losing the air conditioning; its soft top is manually operated.
The base powertrain in the 2011 Porsche Boxster is a 255-horsepower, 2.9-liter, flat 6-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual or an optional double-clutch 7-speed automated manual transmission with paddle shifters and rear-wheel drive. This combination delivers 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with manual transmission, and 20/29 with automated manual transmission, according to the EPA. The Boxster S trim features a 310-horsepower, 3.4-liter, flat 6-cylinder engine; its fuel efficiency is virtually the same. The Boxster Spyder and the Black Edition employ a slightly more powerful edition of that engine: it produces 320 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, with the same fuel efficiency.
Standard safety features on the 2011 Porsche Boxster include anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, front and side seat-mounted air bags, and fixed rollover bars above the headrests.
The 2011 Porsche Boxster starts at an MSRP of $48,100.
