The Torrent is a 5-passenger, 4-door compact SUV (also referred to in the industry as a performance crossover vehicle) with front engine, and front-wheel or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD). The 2009 model is carryover from the 2008 version, and available in base and GXP models. New for 2009 is available Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling, standard head curtain side-impact air bags with rollover protection, and XM satellite radio standard on all models. In addition, three new exterior colors are added: Quicksilver Metallic, Gold Mist Metallic and Cyber Gray Metallic. The Torrent's competition includes the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Jeep Liberty, Toyota RAV4 V-6 and Mazda CX-7.

Model Lineup
Two models are available in the 2009 Pontiac Torrent lineup: the base Torrent and performance-oriented Torrent GXP. Both models are offered in either FWD or AWD. Standard equipment on the 2009 Torrent includes power door locks with remote keyless entry; power windows; air conditioning; tilt steering wheel; rear liftgate with defogger and washer/wiper; flat-folding front passenger seat for longer cargo; and a sliding rear seat with 60/40-split seatback and two-position recline. Also standard are 4-channel ABS, traction control, and 16-inch aluminum wheels on Torrent and 18-inch polished forged aluminum wheels on Torrent GXP.

Option packages available on the 2009 Pontiac Torrent include Preferred, with more than nine features, including remote vehicle start, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls (standard on GXP); Premium, which includes leather seating inserts and heated driver and passenger seats; and Sun and Sound, with power sunroof, AM/FM stereo with 6-disc CD/MP3 player, and Pioneer 7-speaker premium sound system. To personalize the Torrent, there's also an optional chrome appearance package that includes a lot of chrome: grille, front and rear skid plates, roof rails and door handles, and 17-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels.

The Torrent GXP features a distinctive hood; one-inch lower stance; lower front and rear fascias; 18-inch polished, forged aluminum 5-spoke wheels; and P235/50R18 all-season steel-belted radial blackwall tires. On the interior, the Torrent GXP has a leather-wrapped, 3-spoke steering wheel with GXP-specific instruments (including the division's signature red backlighting and 140-mph speedometer) and optional perforated leather or standard tailored cloth-covered heated seats with enhanced lateral support.

Powertrain
Standard on the base 2009 Pontiac Torrent is a 3.4-liter V-6 engine with sequential multi-port fuel injection (SFI) that delivers 185 hp at 5200 rpm and 210 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. Power is transferred through a 5-speed automatic transmission. Torrent GXP models feature a 3.6-liter, V-6 dual-overhead cam (DOHC) engine with SFI and variable valve timing (VVT) that generates 264 hp at 6500 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 2300 rpm. The Torrent GXP has a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. According to Pontiac, the 2009 Torrent GXP accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 3.4-liter V-6 engine are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway in both FWD and AWD models, while the 3.6-liter V-6 engine estimates are also 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway in FWD. In AWD, the GXP's V-6 engine gets an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway.

Four-channel ABS and traction control are standard on all 2009 Pontiac Torrent models. The suspension is independent MacPherson struts in front and independent 4-link with coil springs and trailing arm in the rear. Pontiac says the GXP's front struts have internal rebound springs for improved roll stiffness, steering sensitivity and ride control. Stiffer shock valving, spring rates and suspension bushings; solid, larger stabilizer bars; and hydraulic power steering also come on the Torrent GXP.

Safety features on the 2009 Pontiac Torrent include an electronic stability control system with integrated electronic trailer sway control to detect sway, apply brakes and reduce engine torque to manually lower speed, if necessary; OnStar in-vehicle safety and communications system; tire-pressure monitor; front and rear disc brakes with 4-channel ABS; and traction control. The Torrent also features standard dual-stage frontal driver and passenger air bags with passenger-sensing system; head curtain side-impact air bags with rollover-protection sensors; and 3-point safety belts with LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child safety seats.
