The Torrent is a 5-passenger, 4-door compact SUV (also referred to in the industry as a performance crossover vehicle) with front engine, and front-wheel or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD). New for 2008, Pontiac
adds the high-performance GXP model to its Torrent lineup. The Torrent GXP, which Pontiac says provides the power, performance and agility of a sports car with the capability of a sport utility vehicle, joins the division's stable of GXP vehicles that now includes the Solstice
GXP, Grand Prix
GXP and, also new for 2008, the G6
GXP. In addition, three new exterior colors are available on the Torrent for 2008: Deep Blue Metallic, Carbon Black Metallic and Teal Metallic. Torrent's competition includes the Chevrolet Equinox

Four models are available in the 2008 Pontiac Torrent lineup: Torrent FWD, Torrent AWD, Torrent GXP FWD and Torrent GXP AWD. Standard equipment on the 2008 Torrent includes 4-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS); 16-inch aluminum wheels on Torrent and chrome-clad 18-inch aluminum wheels on the Torrent GXP; traction control on FWD models with ABS; enhanced ride and handling; and an electronic Driver Information Center with digital compass.
Option packages available on the 2008 Pontiac Torrent include Preferred (with more than nine features, including remote vehicle start system, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls); Premium (with leather seating inserts, and heated driver and passenger seats); and Sun and Sound (with a power sunroof, stereo with 6-disc CD/MP3 player, and Pioneer 7-speaker premium sound). There's also an optional chrome exterior package that includes a chrome grille, chrome front and rear skid plates, and chrome roof rails and door handles.
The Torrent GXP's all new exterior design features a distinctive hood; one-inch lower stance; lower front and rear fascias; 18-inch, flangeless, highly polished, forged aluminum 5-spoke wheels and P235/50R18 tires; and chrome dual exhaust tips. Inside, the Torrent GXP has a leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel with GXP-specific instruments and perforated leather or tailored cloth-covered heated seats with enhanced lateral support.Powertrain
Standard on base, non-GXP Pontiac Torrent models is a 3.4-liter V-6 engine with sequential multi-port fuel injection (SFI) that delivers 185 hp at 5200 rpm and 210 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. Power is transferred through a 5-speed automatic transmission. Torrent GXP models feature a 3.6-liter V-6 engine with SFI that delivers 264 hp at 6500 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 2300 rpm. The GXP has a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. According to Pontiac, the 2008 Torrent GXP accelerates 0-to-60 mph in 6.9 seconds. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 3.4-liter V-6 engine are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway, while the 3.6-liter V-6 engine estimates are 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway.Safety
Safety features for the 2008 Pontiac Torrent include GM's StabiliTrak electronic stability control system; OnStar in-vehicle safety and communications system; tire-pressure-monitoring system; cruise control; front and rear disc brakes with 4-channel ABS; electronic trailer sway control integrated into StabiliTrak to detect sway, apply brakes and reduce engine torque to lower speed manually if necessary; dual-stage frontal driver and passenger air bags with passenger sensing system; head curtain side-impact air bags with tip sensor to stay inflated longer during a rollover (standard on GXP); and 3-point safety belts with LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child safety seats.
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
), the 2008 Pontiac Torrent received a perfect 5-star rating for front- and side-impact tests for the driver and front passenger, and rear-seat side impact. In rollover testing, the Torrent received a 4-star rating for both FWD and AWD models.Technology
The 2008 Pontiac Torrent has a driver information center with digital compass, and includes more than 20 vehicle information features such as tire pressure, trip odometer, fuel range and outside temperature display. Torrent's standard audio system is a 6-speaker stereo with CD/MP3 player with auxiliary jack input for iPod/MP3 players. In addition, consumers can choose from a stereo entertainment system with in-dash 6-disc CD changer, DVD and MP3 playback; stereo with navigation or DVD entertainment, CD and MP3 player; Pioneer premium 7-speaker system with amplifier and subwoofer; and XM satellite radio.
