's new flagship high-performance midsize sedan. The G8, which joined Pontiac's lineup midway through the 2008 model year, is the first GM model to employ the automaker's new Zeta RWD architecture, which is designed to accommodate production for global left- and right-hand-drive markets. A 5-passenger, front-engine, rear-drive midsize sedan, it offers few changes in either the G8 or G8 GT models for 2009, but adds XM satellite radio and Bluetooth capability across the board.
Four new exterior paint colors are added for 2009: Maverick Silver, Sport Red, Stryker Blue and Pacific Slate Metallics. Discontinued are Stealth Blue Metallic and Ignition Orange Metallic.Model Lineup
For 2009, the G8 lineup includes three models: G8, G8 GT and all-new, high-performance G8 GXP. Standard equipment includes a 4-wheel independent suspension; electronic stability control; 4-wheel vented disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS) and traction control; 18-inch aluminum wheels; fog lamps; low-profile rear lip spoiler; polished stainless steel exhaust tips; power-adjustable front seats; OnStar and XM satellite radio. Cloth seating is standard on the G8, with heated leather seats available. The G8 GT has an optional 2-tone cloth or leather combination, and the G8 GXP's available 2-tone leather upholstery is black and red with GXP-logo embroidery. The G8 GT has optional 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, while the GXP's 19-inch wheels are painted aluminum with machined face. An optional GT sport package includes the larger wheels and performance tires, leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and alloy pedals.Powertrain
Pontiac's 2009 G8 lineup includes three engines. The base G8 has the 3.6-liter dual overhead cam V-6 engine with variable valve timing (VVT) that delivers 256 hp at 6300 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of torque at 2100 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control. Power in the G8 GT comes from a uniquely-configured 6.0-liter small-block V-8 engine with GM's Active Fuel Management technology that delivers 361 hp at 5300 rpm and 385 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm. Step up to the G8 GXP and you get the new 6.2-liter LS3 engine, the newest in the GM family of small-block V-8 engines, featuring multi-port fuel injection and generating an estimated 402 hp at 6000 rpm and 402 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm with automatic transmission, (400 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm with manual transmission). EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 3.6-liter V-6 is 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway, and 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway for the 6.0-liter V-8 engine. Fuel-economy estimates are not yet available for the GXP's 6.2-liter V-8 engine.
The standard transmission on GT and GXP models is a 6-speed automatic with clutch-to-clutch operation and 6.04:1 overall ratio for better launch acceleration and overdrive ratios with lower rpms for better fuel economy and reduced noise, Pontiac says. A new optional 6-speed next-generation Tremec manual transmission features premium gear synchronizers; stronger gears, housing and bell housing; single-piece countershaft and machined gear teeth, all designed to give the G8 better shift performance. Base and GT models have 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and all-speed traction control. Brembro brakes in the high-performance GXP include 14-inch vented front and 12.75-inch rear disc rotors, including 4-piston alloy calipers in front. Base G8 and G8 GT models have GM's FE2 suspension, 4-wheel independent, fully adjustable and tuned for the highest performance, while the GXP has a track-tuned FE3 suspension.Safety
All 2009 Pontiac G8 models feature 4-wheel vented disc brakes with ABS; all-speed traction control; electronic stability control; tire-pressure monitor; OnStar; ride-down steering column; and breakaway pedal system. There are also six air bags: seat-mounted thorax air bags and dual-stage frontal air bags for front passengers with automatic passenger-sensing system, and roof-rail side-impact air bags for both seating rows. Four air bag sensors (two electronic front and two side-impact) connect to a sensing diagnostic module. In addition to the standard OnStar safety services, Turn-by-Turn Navigation is also available.
As of this writing, the 2009 Pontiac G8 models have not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
) for crash or rollover tests.Technology
The 2009 Pontiac G8 lineup features XM satellite radio, Bluetooth capability, and OnStar as standard equipment. The GXP features a premium 230-watt Blaupunkt audio system. Later in the year, Bluetooth capability will be integrated into the standard OnStar system for hands-free calling.
