Overview
The Pontiac G5 for 2009, while mostly carryover from the 2008 model, does add a new, more powerful and efficient version of the 2.2-liter Ecotec engine with variable valve timing (VVT), which delivers an EPA-estimated 37 mpg highway. The increased fuel economy is also due to new 3.63 final-drive ratio with manual transmission and new low-rolling-resistance tires. Also new this year: dual-stage inflatable driver and front passenger, low-risk deployment air bags, Bluetooth capability, and iPod-compatible USB port in the radio. The subcompact, 2-door, 5-passenger entry-level coupe is available in one body style and two trim levels (base and GT), with standard 5-speed manual transmission and optional 4-speed automatic transmission. Two new exterior colors-Quicksilver Metallic and Silver Green Metallic-and a new Red/Ebony leather interior trim combination are added for 2009. Competition for the G5 includes the Volkswagen Rabbit, Scion tC, Ford Focus and Mazda 3.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Pontiac G5 coupe is available in base G5 coupe or GT coupe. Standard equipment on the base coupe includes remote keyless entry; power windows and door locks; air conditioning; tire-pressure-monitoring system; OnStar; carpeted floor mats; rear spoiler; 15-inch wheels and all-season blackwall tires; and XM satellite radio. Base G5 options include anti-lock brakes (ABS); leather seats; 7-speaker Pioneer sound system (with 10-inch subwoofer); up-level radio with USB input port; cruise control; traction control; remote start; sunroof; cargo net; body-side moldings; fog lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; and 16-inch aluminum wheels.

In addition to the features listed for the base model, the 2009 G5 GT coupe includes standard electronic stability control; 17-inch polished aluminum wheels and performance blackwall tires; (ABS); sport rocker moldings; heated seats; fog lamps; cruise control; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; leather-wrapped shift knob; and a cargo net.

New content and additional changes occur with three popular equipment packages. A new MYLINK package has 16-inch machine-face wheels, 4-wheel ABS, cruise control, chrome exhaust tip, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, steering wheel audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity. Powertrain
Both 2009 Pontiac G5 models are powered by the new version of the 2.2-liter Ecotec 16-valve, dual-overhead cam (DOHC) 4-cylinder VVT engine that delivers 155 hp at 6100 rpm and 150 lb.-ft. of torque at 4900 rpm. The engine comes standard with a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission, with an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic with overdrive optional. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2.2-liter engine in the base G5 are 23 mpg city/33 mpg highway (with automatic transmission) and 25 mpg city/35 mpg highway (with manual transmission). The G5 GT gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg city/32 mpg highway in both automatic and manual configurations. All-speed traction control, stability enhancement system, 4-wheel ABS, sport suspension and tire-pressure monitor are standard or available, depending on the model.

The 2009 Pontiac G5 has MacPherson strut-type front suspension, semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bars. Two suspension settings are offered: FE1 touring (standard on base), and FE3 sport-tuned (standard on GT).

Safety

A theft-deterrent system works with the vehicle's engine immobilizer to prohibit vehicle start-up from keys that are incorrectly coded. OnStar service with GM's advanced automatic crash notification system and tire-pressure monitor are standard, while OnStar's Vehicle Diagnostics notification system is optional. Electronic stability control, all-speed traction control, and ABS are standard or optional, depending on the model.
