Overview
Exploding consumer interest in the small car segment undoubtedly contributed to Pontiac's decision to bring the subcompact G3 hatchback to the U.S. market in the spring of 2009. The car is already successful in Canada as the Pontiac G3 Wave, and in Mexico as a sedan model. The G3 joins three other Pontiac models in the "Over 30" (mpg) club: the 2009 Vibe (32 mpg), G6 sedan (33 mpg), and G5 coupe (37 mpg).

Model Lineup
The Pontiac G3 offers an uncommonly high level of standard content for an entry-level car, says the automaker, and provides the "best shoulder and hip room in the segment" with seating for five adults in a 5-door hatchback configuration. The interior features theater-style seating for rear-seat passengers, and with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats lowered, up to 42 cubic feet of cargo space is available. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, CD/MP3 audio system with auxiliary input jack, fog lamps, rear spoiler, and OnStar.

The options list includes an automatic transmission, anti-lock brakes (only available with the automatic transmission), cruise control and a sunroof. The Cruisin' package adds cruise control, XM satellite radio, and steering-wheel-mounted controls. A Preferred package includes power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, theft deterrent, and power-adjustable heated outside mirrors. Lastly, a Sport package adds 15-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped shift knob, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The 2009 Pontiac G3 is offered with GM's 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Powertrain
Power for the 2009 Pontiac G3 comes from a fuel-efficient, 1.6-liter, Ecotec 4-cylinder engine. The standard powerplant generates 106 hp and is mated to a standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission. Sending power to the front wheels, the G3 earns an EPA-estimated 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway with the automatic transmission.

Safety
All 2009 Pontiac G3 models are equipped with a long list of standard safety features including driver and front passenger frontal air bags, side air bags, daytime running lights, child safety locks, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system. Anti-lock brakes are available as an option (with the automatic transmission only).

The 2009 Pontiac G3 has been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The subcompact sedan earned 5-star ratings (the agency's highest) for both driver and front passenger in frontal crash testing. In the side crash test, the G3 earned 4-star ratings for both the front and rear seating positions. The 2009 Pontiac G3 has not been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
The standard engine in the 2009 Pontiac G3 is an ECOTEC 1.6-liter 4-cylinder. The efficient powerplant features variable valve timing, or VVT, which allows the timing, lift or duration of the intake or exhaust valves to change for optimal combustion while the engine is running, GM says. Unlike traditional valve trains which are only running optimally at one engine speed, the VVT system in the G3 keeps the engine efficient at all speeds, contributing to the vehicle's high fuel mileage, the automaker claims.
