Exterior Features
The 2013 Nissan Xterra is a traditional body-on-frame SUV with genuine off-roading capability. It is constructed on the same "F-Alpha" platform as the Nissan Frontier and is sold in X, S and PRO-4X trims. Standard equipment for the 2013 Nissan Xterra X includes 16-inch steel wheels, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, and power exterior mirrors.

Interior Features
The Nissan Xterra X is equipped with standard cloth seats, air conditioning, 6-speaker audio system with a CD player, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and cruise control. An automatic transmission is standard on this trim level, too. With the rear seat in use, the Xterra holds 36.3 cubic feet of cargo. Fold it down, and the Xterra accommodates 65.7 cubic feet of cargo.

Optional Features
Aside from a 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system, Nissan does not offer factory-installed options for the Xterra X. Extra-cost accessories are available from the dealer, but purchasing the Xterra S is the better path to equip the SUV with upgrades.

The Xterra S is equipped with 16-inch aluminum wheels, side step rails, an Easy Clean cargo area, adjustable Utili-track cargo tie-down channels, and a first-aid kit. For 2013, a new touch-screen display audio system with an auxiliary audio input jack, USB port, and satellite radio is included on the Xterra S. Models with 4WD get a roof-mounted cargo basket, and buyers can select between a manual gearbox or an automatic transmission.

The Xterra PRO-4X offers standard 4WD and is designed to tackle serious trails. Unique 16-inch aluminum wheels with off-road tires are standard, along with automatic headlights with silver trim, roof-mounted off-road lights, rear tire deflectors, and skid plates for the transfer case, oil pan, and fuel tank. Off-road shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, hill-start assist (with automatic transmission), and hill-descent control are also included on the PRO-4X trim.

Inside, the Xterra PRO-4X is upgraded with a fold-flat front passenger's seat with protective seat back trim, unique seat fabric, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an outside temperature display in the rearview mirror. Bluetooth is standard on this model, as well as a navigation system, reversing camera, and a premium sound system. The PRO-4X is offered with an optional Leather package containing leather upholstery.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Xterra is equipped with a standard 4.0-liter V-6 engine generating 261 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive (2WD) are standard for Xterra X models, with 4WD optional. The Xterra S and PRO-4X can be equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed automatic. Four-wheel drive is optional on the Xterra S and standard on the PRO-4X.

Fuel Economy
As this overview is written, the EPA has not published official fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Nissan Xterra.

Every 2013 Nissan Xterra is equipped with 6 air bags, traction and stability control system, and 4-wheel ventilated disc anti-lock brakes. The PRO-4X model is also equipped with a reversing camera system.

As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not performed crash tests on the 2013 Xterra, but does give the SUV a 3-star rollover rating for both 2WD and 4WD models. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2013 Xterra's crash protection, but the structurally identical 2012 model received a "Good" rating in the moderate overlap frontal-impact test, "Good" rating in the side-impact test, "Acceptable" rating for roof crush strength, and a "Marginal" rating for rear-impact injury prevention.
