Exterior Features
The 2012 Nissan Xterra is a compact SUV that shares a platform with the Nissan Frontier pickup truck. According to Nissan, the Xterra is built for rugged off-road use and carrying heavy loads--the Xterra can handle a payload of more than 1,000 pounds. and, with proper equipment, can tow up to 5,000 pounds. The Xterra is offered in three trims. The base trim, X, features 16-inch wheels, roof rack side rails, and rear privacy glass, and is available in 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive (2WD or 4WD). The S trim features alloy wheels with off-road tires, and the 4WD version adds an upgraded roof rack. The Pro-4X comes only in 4WD and adds an electronic locking rear differential, fog lights, roof-mounted off-road lights, heavy-duty shocks, skid plates, BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control.

Interior Features
The Nissan Xterra X trim features cloth upholstery, air conditioning, some power accessories, and a 6-speaker sound system. The S trim adds a first-aid kit, cargo organizer, and more adjustability to the driver's seat. The Pro-4X includes upgraded cloth upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, Rockford Fosgate sound system, and many other enhancements. Cargo capacity is 35 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and 66 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Optional Features
Leather upholstery is available with the Pro-4X trim.

Under the Hood
The Nissan Xterra's standard power plant is a 4.0-liter V-6 engine rated at 261 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft. of torque. Two-wheel-drive models work with a 5-speed automatic transmission, while 4WD models are fitted with either a 5-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual.
