The 2014 Nissan Versa is an inexpensive 4-door sedan that is priced to compete against entry-level models but is sized like a larger car and equipped with a 14.9 cu.-ft. trunk. It serves as the entry point to the Nissan lineup, and competes against small sedans such as the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent, and Kia Rio.

Models and Features
Nissan offers the 2014 Versa in four levels of specification, starting with the Versa S. Air conditioning, cloth seats, tilt steering wheel, trip computer, 2-speaker stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary audio input jack, and 15-inch steel wheels with plastic wheel covers are standard. The Versa S is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Select the Versa S Plus, and the car includes a continuously variable transmission (CVT), cruise control, additional stereo speakers, upgraded interior trim, and aerodynamic enhancements to improve fuel economy.

The Versa SV adds power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, power exterior mirrors, driver's seat height adjuster, center armrest, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, remote trunk release, electroluminescent gauges, expanded trip computer functions, and significant upgrades to interior and exterior trim.

Versa SL models are equipped with 16-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, Nissan Intelligent Key passive entry with push-button ignition, Bluetooth connectivity, tire-pressuring monitoring system with an Easy Fill Tire Alert, and a premium sound system with satellite radio and a USB port.

Options and Packages
Aside from dealer-installed accessories and a 4-speed automatic transmission, the Versa S is available with splash guards, a rear spoiler, floor mats, auto-dimming rearview mirror with a compass, universal garage door opener, illuminated doorsill kick plates, and a chrome plinth for the trunk. Many of these items are also available for other Versa trim levels.

The Versa S Plus is offered in a greater array of paint colors, while the Versa SV is offered with an additional interior color called Sandstone. A Convenience package equips the Versa SV with Bluetooth, upgraded audio system, and 15-inch aluminum wheels. Fog lights and interior trim improvements are also optional for this version.

A Technology package is optional for the Versa SL, equipping the car with a NissanConnect infotainment system that includes a 5.8-inch touch-screen display and voice recognition. NissanConnect has a reversing camera, navigation system, real-time traffic and weather reports, Pandora compatibility, and a hands-free text-messaging assistant.

Under the Hood
A 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for every 2014 Versa, generating 109 horsepower, adequate for a car weighing fewer than 2,500 pounds when equipped with every option. The Versa S has a standard 5-speed manual gearbox, with a 4-speed automatic available as an option. All other Versas come standard with a CVT.

Fuel Economy
Thanks to a lower coefficient of drag and the more efficient CVT, the Versa S Plus, Versa SV, and Versa SL are rated to get 31 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway, and 35 mpg in combined driving. Compare those figures to the base Versa S, which ranges between 26 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Safety equipment highlights include a reversing camera, hands-free text-messaging assistant, and an Easy Fill Tire Alert system that makes it easier for a Versa owner to maintain proper tire pressures. These are standard or optional only for the Versa SL trim level.

In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the 2014 Versa received 4 stars (out of 5 stars). It received 3 stars for frontal-impact protection and 3 stars for side-impact protection.

As of this writing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2014 Versa for crash protection.
