What's New for 2014:

  • Completely redesigned
  • Updated powertrain and improved fuel economy
  • Available third-row seat
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Several new safety and convenience features
  • Optional adjustable rear cargo floor

The 2014 Nissan Rogue is a redesigned crossover SUV model offering seating for up to 7 passengers, power from a 4-cylinder engine, the option of front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), and the choice of three trim levels. Competitors include the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Patriot, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forester, and the Toyota RAV4.

Models and Features
In entry-level S guise, the 2014 Nissan Rogue may surprise some budget-conscious shoppers with a list of standard amenities that includes Bluetooth connectivity, power turn signal mirrors, height-adjustable driver's seat, sliding and reclining second-row 40/20/40 split-folding bench seat, infotainment system with 5-in. display screen text-messaging capabilities, rearview camera, and a reconfigurable cargo area.

A move up to the mid-level Rogue SV avails buyers to extras like 17-in. alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, roof rails, automatic headlights, power driver's seat with 6-way adjustment, premium audio including satellite radio service and integrated Internet apps such as Pandora, dual-zone climate control, and push-button start.

At the top of the Rogue lineup is the SL trim level. Here, Nissan has pulled out the stops with leather upholstery and trim, 18-in. alloy wheels, heated mirrors and front seats, power liftgate, fog lights, navigation system with a 7-in. touch-screen display, Bose audio, and a 360-degree exterior camera system.

Options and Packages
Among the many changes that highlight the 2014 Nissan Rogue is the newly available 50/50 split-folding third-row bench seat, offered exclusively on S and SV trim levels as part of the Family package. In addition, the SV can be upgraded with a power tilt/slide moonroof or a Premium package consisting of the touch-screen navigation system, 360-degree exterior camera, power liftgate, and safety features including blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning systems, and moving-object-detection systems. An SL Premium package bundles those last items with the moonroof, auto-leveling LED headlights, and forward-collision warning technology.

Under the Hood
All versions of the 2014 Nissan Rogue are fitted with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque, output that's managed by a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a sport mode. FWD and AWD models are offered. Complementing the Rogue's powertrain is a chassis that includes electric power steering and a fully independent suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars. Towing capacity is 1,000 lbs. when properly equipped.

Fuel Economy
As is typical, the FWD Rogue proves to be more fuel efficient than its AWD counterpart, though the advantage is only slight. According to EPA figures, the former should average 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, whereas the latter is expected to return 25 and 32 mpg, respectively.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Nissan Rogue received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Rogue received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for small overlap front-impact protection; the Rogue also received a "Top Safety Pick+" designation from the Institute.

In terms of related equipment, the 2014 Rogue features 4-wheel anti-lock vented disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, LED daytime running lights, 6 air bags, hill-start assist, hill-hold control (AWD only), Nissan's Easy-Fill tire-alert system (beeps when tires have been filled to proper inflation), and Active Trace Control and Active Ride Control systems engineered to provide safer handling.
