What's New for 2014:

  • Pathfinder Hybrid debuts
  • Tech package for SL trim level

Nissan redesigned the 3-row, 7-passenger Pathfinder for the 2013 model year, transforming it from a rugged SUV based on a pickup truck platform into a crossover SUV sharing mechanical components with the Nissan Murano. For 2014, a new Pathfinder Hybrid debuts, improving the SUV's combined fuel-economy rating by 4 mpg in exchange for a $3,000 price premium.

Models and Features
The 2014 Pathfinder is available in S, SV, SL, and Platinum trim levels. Pathfinder Hybrids can be equipped with SV, SL, and Platinum trim. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, with 4-wheel drive (4WD) optional.

Upgrading to the Pathfinder SV adds Bluetooth hands-free calling, a USB port, satellite radio, Nissan Intelligent Key passive entry, 7-inch color monitor with an information center, reversing camera, and rear park-assist sensors. Automatic headlights, speed-sensing wipers, and roof rails are also included on the Pathfinder SV, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, additional power adjustments for the driver's seat, one-touch operation for the front passenger's window, illuminated visor vanity mirrors, audio/video input jacks, and individual tire-pressure monitoring.

The Pathfinder SL has leather seats, heated front and rear seats, memory for the driver's seat and mirror settings, power lumbar adjustment for the driver, and 4-way power adjustment for the front passenger. The SL's interior has wood-tone trim, welcome lighting, and stainless steel doorsill kick plates, while the exterior receives fog lights, chrome body side moldings, and heated side mirrors. A power rear liftgate, remote engine starting, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a universal garage door opener are also standard for this version of the Pathfinder.

The Pathfinder Platinum is equipped with 20-inch aluminum wheels, towing equipment, a hard-drive navigation system with an 8-inch screen and real-time traffic and weather service, Around View Monitor system, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, ventilated front seats, 13-speaker premium audio system with Bluetooth streaming audio capability and a DVD player, and a 120-volt power outlet.

The Pathfinder Hybrid differs in that it is equipped with unique hybrid powertrain information screens, unique badges, and LED taillights.

Options and Packages
Pathfinder buyers looking to upgrade their SUV have numerous factory- and dealer-installed options from which to choose. Depending on the trim level, highlights include floor mats, fog lights, roof rail crossbars, cargo net, auto-dimming interior mirror, universal garage door opener, remote engine starting, rear-seat entertainment system, trailer-towing equipment, and a tent that attaches to the Pathfinder's rear liftgate.

The Pathfinder SL can be upgraded with an SL Premium package that adds a 13-speaker premium audio system with Bluetooth streaming audio capability and a DVD player, panoramic sunroof, towing equipment, and a 120-volt power outlet. Alternatively, the SL is offered with an SL Tech package equipped with the premium audio system plus a hard-drive navigation system.

A Platinum Premium package is optional for the Pathfinder Premium trim level and includes a panoramic sunroof and a triple-zone rear-seat entertainment system with rear audio/video input jacks.

Under the Hood
The 2014 Pathfinder is equipped with a 260-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that drives the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). An All-Mode Intuitive 4WD system is optional.

The new Pathfinder Hybrid is equipped with Nissan's new Intelligent Dual Clutch parallel hybrid powertrain, which combines a supercharged, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, 15-kW electric motor, and a Lithium-ion battery tucked beneath the SUV's third-row seat. Together, these components make 250 horsepower.

Fuel Economy
Equipped with FWD, the 2014 Pathfinder is rated to get 20 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg in combined driving. Add the optional 4WD system, and those ratings fall to 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 mpg in combined driving.

As this overview is written, official EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid are unavailable. Nissan claims it will get 25 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 26 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2014 Pathfinder.

Nissan equips every Pathfinder with an Easy Fill Tire Alert system, which makes it easy to maintain proper tire pressures. All versions of the 2014 Pathfinder except for the base S trim level are also equipped with a reversing camera and rear park-assist sensors. An Around View Monitor is offered for the Pathfinder Platinum trim level, providing a 360-degree, top-down view of the SUV's surroundings.
