Overview

What's New for 2014:

  • Retuned engine
  • Revised chassis
  • Track Edition added to lineup

Introduction
Though dubbed a Nissan, the 2014 GT-R shares little with stablemates including the 370Z, Altima, Frontier, and electric Leaf. Unlike those mainstream models, the GT-R is a super car in every sense, with go-fast styling and world-class performance to back it up. Three trim levels are offered, each equipped with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and a twin-turbocharged engine. Competitors include the SRT Viper, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Audi R8 V10, BMW M6, Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, Jaguar XKR S Coupe, Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG, and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Models and Features
While it may sound a bit odd, the base 4-passenger GT-R is known as the Premium model, and is decked out with 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in sticky high-performance run-flat tires, HID headlights with LED accents, carbon-fiber underbody panel, leather and suede upholstery, and equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, heated front seats, high-end audio, and a 7-inch touch-screen navigation system. The list of amenities also includes push-button start, three distinct settings for the transmission and chassis, and aluminum interior trim.

Following the Premium's lead is the mid-level 2014 Nissan GT-R Black Edition. Again, 20-inch alloy wheels are standard fare, though the styling is different. Designers have also added a carbon-fiber rear spoiler, as well as Recaro front bucket seats dressed in black and red trim.

Situated at the top of the GT-R range is the Track Edition model. As its name implies, this variant is purpose-built for very aggressive driving, so engineers have fit the car with extra carbon-fiber brake ducts and a retuned suspension. They've also removed the rear seats and limited the heating function to the driver's side only.

Options and Packages
All versions of the 2014 Nissan GT-R are available with the Super Silver Special Metallic paint option, but in terms of other options, they're limited to the GT-R Premium. Buyers of the so-called base model can select a Red Amber interior, or a Cold Weather package consisting of all-season tires and engine coolant best suited for cooler locales.

Under the Hood
Nissan equips its hot-rod sports car with a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V-6 engine that has been massaged to provide greater response at higher revs. Output measures 545 horsepower and 463 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which is funneled to each of the four wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission with paddle shifters. The setup includes downshift rev matching, limited-slip differential, hill-start assist, and a snow-mode setting for those who introduce their high-performance Nissan to inclement weather. Also working behind the scenes are ample Brembo brakes, driver-adjustable Bilstein shocks, and a fully independent aluminum suspension.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Nissan GT-R AWD are 16/23/19 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Safety and Ratings
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Nissan GT-R.

Standard safety equipment on the 2014 Nissan GT-R includes 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, a rearview camera, bright LED taillights, 6 air bags, and traction control.
