What's New for 2014:

  • Updated option packages
  • Added standard features
  • Revised navigation system
  • Optional smartphone-linked infotainment system

The 2014 Nissan Frontier is a midsize pickup truck available in 2-door king and 4-door crew cab configurations with either rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or 4-wheel-drive (4WD) capability. Competitors include the Honda Ridgeline and Toyota Tacoma.

Models and Features
There are a total of five trim levels for the 2014 Nissan Frontier, though their availability can be dependent upon cab style and drivetrain. The lineups starts with the S, host to newly standard amenities including Bluetooth connectivity, a sliding rear window, air conditioning, and cruise control.

One step up from the S is the Frontier SV, which is differentiated from the base Frontier thanks to the addition of 16-inch alloy wheels, upgraded audio system with an auxiliary input jack and satellite radio capability, and some basics like power windows and door locks.

Next in line is the Frontier Desert Runner, offered only in RWD guise and equipped with the SV's features plus off-road shocks, aggressive all-terrain tires, unique exterior trim details, and white-faced gauges. The 4WD counterpart to the Desert Runner is the PRO-4X, which shares some components but stands alone with its multiple underbody skid plates, embroidered seats, distinct alloy wheels, and--new for 2014--heated front seats.

For a more luxurious truck experience, Nissan offers the Frontier SL. This pickup is appointed with 18-inch alloy wheels, running boards, leather upholstery, power front seats, 10-speaker premium sound system, and auto-dimming rearview mirrors.

Options and Packages
For those who want a bit more than the Frontier's standard fare, Nissan offers a few select options that bundle a number of desirable features.

One example is the SV Value Truck package, contents of which include a spray-in bedliner, adjustable tie-downs in the bed, tow hitch, rear park-assist sensors, dual-zone climate control, and heated seats. The second notable offering is the PRO-4X Luxury package, home to many of the SL's standard goods as well as a power tilt/slide moonroof and a smartphone-linked 5.8-inch touch-screen navigation system with improved voice-recognition technology.

Under the Hood
Nissan equips RWD king cab versions of the 2014 Frontier pickup with a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 152 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which is managed by a 5-speed manual or optional 5-speed automatic transmission. Maximum payload capacity is rated at 971 lbs., while towing capacity peaks at 3,500 lbs.

Available on the king cab and standard on Frontier crew cab models is a 4.0-liter V-6 engine that produces 261 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft. of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and 5-speed automatic. The extra gusto under the hood translates to increased capability; maximum payload capacity jumps up to 1,481 lbs. and the tow rating is raised to 6,330 lbs.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2014 Nissan Frontier are:
  • Frontier RWD with 4-cylinder engine and manual transmission: 19/23/21 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Frontier RWD with 4-cylinder engine and automatic transmission: 17/23/19 mpg
  • Frontier RWD with V-6 engine and manual transmission: 16/22/19 mpg

Safety and Ratings

As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2014 Nissan Frontier.

Among the truck's many safety features are 6 air bags, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic stability control, and, on certain trim levels, hill-start assist and hill-descent control. A rearview camera is standard on SL and PRO-4X versions.
