The Nissan Frontier is a midsize pickup truck that has been in production since 1998. The Frontier replaced the Nissan "Hardbody" pickup that the automaker first introduced in the mid-1980s. According to the manufacturer, the first-generation Frontier was the first compact truck to offer a 4-door body style (known as the "Crew Cab") in North America. It was replaced by the second-generation model in 2005. The completely redesigned Frontier, larger and sturdier than its predecessor, was built on the same platform shared with Nissan's full-size Titan pickup. The two share a number of features including suspension design, spray-in bedliner, and a fully boxed all-steel frame. After a refresh in 2009, Nissan is only making minor changes for 2011. These include new trim designations and minor option updates.
The 2011 Nissan Frontier is offered in King (extended) and Crew Cab configurations, with a 5- or 6-foot pickup bed, depending on trim level. There are four trim levels: S, SV, Pro-4X, and SL. Base S models arrive without air conditioning (available in an option package) and feature cloth upholstery and 15-inch steel wheels. The upgraded Frontier SV models are fitted with standard air conditioning, full power accessories, upgraded cloth upholstery, keyless entry, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, and more. The Frontier Pro-4X is designed for off-road use, with upgraded suspension, skid plates for underbody protection, locking rear differential, off-road tires, and unique cosmetic treatments. The Frontier SL is luxury-oriented, with automatic headlamps, optional sunroof, upgraded audio, 18-inch alloy wheels, and other amenities.
The 2011 Nissan Frontier is offered with two different engines. The standard powerplant is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 152 horsepower. The standard transmission is a 5-speed manual. The larger powerplant is a 4.0-liter V-6 engine rated at 261 horsepower. It is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, or an optional 5- or 6-speed automatic depending on trim level. Rear-wheel drive (2WD) is standard, with 4-wheel drive (4WD) optional. When properly equipped, the 2011 Nissan Frontier is able to tow 6000 pounds, according to the manufacturer. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 Nissan Frontier between 14 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.
The 2011 Nissan Frontier S 2WD starts at a base price of around $23,000, and the model range tops out with the Frontier SL Crew Cab, which starts at around $29,000.
