The largest model in its lineup, Nissan initially introduced the Pathfinder Armada full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) for the 2004 model year. The following year, the name was shortened to simply "Armada". The Armada shares its platform with the Nissan Titan pickup and is a sister to the Infiniti QX56. All models share the identical V-8 powerplant, and the Armada is the only full-size Japanese SUV on the market with an available E85 fuel option. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard and 4-wheel drive (4WD) is offered. Standard seating is for 8 with second- and third-row split bench seats that fold flat. Second-row bucket seats are available for 7-passenger capacity with a center walkthrough. After significant enhancements (including a resyling in 2008), Nissan has only made minor changes to the options and standard equipment for 2009.

Nissan's New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers the 2009 Nissan Armada during the first 3 years/36,000 miles. A powertrain warranty extends to 5 years/60,000 miles. There is no deductible on either warranty, and towing may be reimbursed if the vehicle is less than 36 months old.

Model Lineup
Nissan offers the 2009 Armada in SE and LE trim, each with RWD or 4WD. Standard on Armada SE models are 18-inch alloy wheels; automatic headlights; cloth upholstery; fold-flat front passenger seat; reclining and folding second-row bench seat; split folding third-row bench seat; AM/FM stereo with 6-disc CD player; automatic climate control; and power-adjustable pedals. Armada LE models add a self-leveling rear air suspension; 20-inch alloy wheels; fog lights; leather upholstery; heated front seats; second-row bucket seats; Music Box hard-drive radio with XM satellite radio; Nissan's Intelligent Key; power rear liftgate; and seat-mounted side-impact air bags. Available options include a rearview camera; Bluetooth hands-free cell phone link; navigation system; power-folding third-row seat; heated steering wheel; sunroof; towing package; and a rear DVD entertainment system.

Changed for 2009, equipment previously included in the LE Preferred package (heated front seats, power quarter glass flip-out, power-folding outside mirrors with puddle lamps and turn signals, memory setting for driver's seat/mirrors/pedals, and Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System) and LE Tow package (receiver hitch with 7-pin wiring harness, larger battery, 3.357:1 gear ratio) now comes standard on the Armada LE base model. The 2009 Armada LE also features new 20-inch chrome clad wheels when optioned with the Technology package. In addition, the Armada SE Driver's package now offers a moonroof, and second-row captain's chairs are available on all Armada LE packages.

The 2009 Nissan Armada is fitted with a standard 5.6-liter V-8 engine-the only powerplant option. It produces 317 hp and 385 lb.-ft. of torque. The Armada may also be ordered as a flexible-fuel vehicle (FFV), so it can run on gasoline or E85, which is a mixture of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. The transmission is a 5-speed automatic with a tow/haul mode. EPA fuel economy is estimated at 12 mpg city/18 mpg highway with RWD, and 12 mpg city/17 mpg highway with 4WD. When running on E85 fuel, economy drops to 9 mpg city/13 mpg highway. The 4WD system is a full-time system that can be driven on dry pavement and includes a 2-speed transfer case for low-range gearing. Anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control and stability control are all standard. Double-wishbone independent suspension is found at all four corners, and an automatic air rear leveling system is offered. The maximum towing capacity is 9100 pounds.

Four air bags are standard on all 2009 Nissan Armada models. These include dual frontal air bags and side curtain air bags that cover all three seating rows and include rollover deployment. Seat-mounted, front side-impact air bags are optional. Other standard safety features include ABS with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, stability control, tire-pressure monitor, active front head restraints, and rear obstacle detection. Front obstacle detection and a rearview camera are both optional.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in frontal impacts the Nissan Armada receives a 4-star rating for the driver and a 5-star rating for the front passenger. It receives a 3-star rating for rollover resistance, and has not been tested for side-impact crashes. The Nissan Armada has not been crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Nissan's familiar Music Box hard-drive audio package is available on the 2009 Armada. The radio has 9.3 gigabytes of disk space to hold music files that can be ripped in-dash directly from CDs. The navigation system is also hard-drive based. It is offered with XM NavTraffic, which reports real-time traffic conditions. A Bluetooth hands-free cell phone link allows cell phone calls to be played over the vehicle's speakers. Nissan's Intelligent Key has a proximity sensor so you don't need to unlock the vehicle as you approach it. It also allows for keyless starting with the fob in your pocket or purse.
