The 2014 Nissan Altima is a midsize, 4-door family sedan offered with a choice between a 4-cylinder and a V-6 engine. The Altima, last redesigned for the 2013 model year, competes against a wide range of models including the Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat.

Models and Features
For 2014, the Altima is available in two model series. The Altima 2.5 models have a 4-cylinder engine while the Altima 3.5 models have a V-6 engine. Only the Altima 2.5 is offered in a base level of trim. Otherwise, both series share S, SV, and, SL trim level designations.

Upgrading to the Altima 2.5 S adds a power driver's seat with a seatback pocket, cruise control, additional stereo speakers, automatic headlights, illuminated visor vanity mirrors, sun visor extensions, cabin micro-filter, carpeted trunk-lid trim, individual tire-pressure monitoring, and Nissan Intelligent Key passive entry. Selecting this version also gives buyers access to a broader array of options.

The Altima 3.5 S adds paddle shifters, a thicker rear stabilizer bar, 18-inch aluminum wheels, NissanConnect technology with a 5-inch touch-screen audio system, USB port, and satellite radio.

Select the Altima 2.5 SV and the car is equipped with 17-inch aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, NissanConnect with touch-screen audio and satellite radio, USB port, hands-free text messaging capability, leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote engine starting, and a reversing camera.

Fog lights and heated exterior mirrors with LED turn signal indicators are standard for the Altima 3.5 SV, along with a power sunroof, universal garage door opener, rear-seat air conditioning vents, one-touch front passenger's window operation, auto-dimming interior mirror with a compass, cabin mood lighting, and a trunk cargo net.

The Altima 2.5 SL is equipped with most of these features plus leather upholstery, power lumbar support adjustment for the driver's seat, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, leather-wrapped shift knob, upgraded interior trim, LED taillights, and a premium audio system. Altima 3.5 SL models have these upgrades plus HID headlights.

Options and Packages
The 2014 Altima can be optioned with packages, individual features, and dealer-installed accessories.

A Display Audio package is offered for the 2.5 S, adding NissanConnect with a touch-screen audio system, satellite radio, NissanConnect Apps, hands-free text messaging capability, USB port, and a reversing camera. This system, which is standard for the 3.5 S, can be upgraded in both models with the Navigation package, which adds a larger touch screen, voice-recognition technology, and a navigation system.

In addition to these upgrades, the Altima 2.5 SV can be equipped with a Convenience package that adds the equipment that comes standard for the Altima 3.5 SV. A Technology package is also available for SV and SL trim levels, and it includes the Navigation package plus blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, and moving-object detection systems.

Additional factory options, depending on the trim level selected, include a power sunroof, carpeted floor mats, trunk mat, trunk organizer, body side moldings, first aid kit, and illuminated doorsill kick plates.

Under the Hood
A 182-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine powers the Altima 2.5 models, while the Altima 3.5 has a 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Both power plants are paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) driving the car's front wheels. Paddle shifters are included for Altima 3.5 models.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the Altima 2.5 is rated to return 27 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. Choose the Altima 3.5 and you can expect to get 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
The 2014 Nissan Altima received a 5-star (out of 5 stars) overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2014 Altima's crash-test performance.

Every 2014 Altima is equipped with an Easy Fill Tire Alert system to help owners maintain proper tire pressure. When filling the tires with air, the system chirps the horn when the proper pressure is reached, helping to make this important vehicle maintenance task easier.

The Altima SV and SL trim levels can be upgraded with blind-spot monitoring and a lane-departure warning system. Additionally, the car's moving-object detection system identifies when traffic is approaching the car from the side, helping drivers to reverse from blind parking spaces or driveways.
