The new 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact crossover SUV that distinguishes itself with an excellent crash-test rating, long warranty, unusual safety features for the class, and a standard third-row seat suitable for transporting smaller people. It competes against the Chevrolet Equinox, Dodge Journey, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Models and Features
Mitsubishi sells the 2014 Outlander in ES, SE, and GT trim levels. The ES and SE have a 4-cylinder engine, while the GT has a V-6 engine. All-wheel drive is optional for the SE and standard for the GT.

Choose the Outlander SE and the SUV is upgraded with a 6.1-inch touch-screen stereo with HD Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, and a reversing camera. This trim level also includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, upgraded gauges, and a FAST-Key passive entry system with push-button starting. Standard fog lights and 18-inch aluminum wheels identify the Outlander SE.

Select the Outlander GT and the SUV has a more powerful V-6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, Active Front Differential, and the automaker's Super All-Wheel-Control (AWC) all-wheel-drive system. Rain-sensing wipers, HID headlights, chrome exterior trim, woodgrain interior trim, and satellite radio are also included with this version.

Options and Packages
Outlander buyers can upgrade the SE and GT trim levels with a Premium package containing leather seats, a power driver's seat, power rear liftgate, and a power sunroof. This package also adds a premium surround-sound system with satellite radio, and applies simulated wood trim to the SE's interior.

A Touring package is also offered for SE and GT versions. It includes the Premium package plus a navigation system with a larger 7-inch touch-screen display, real-time traffic reports, 3-D mapping, speed limit information, lane-departure warning system, and an adaptive cruise control system with forward-collision mitigation technology.

Additional upgrades include a rear-seat entertainment system, rear park-assist sensors, towing equipment, LED interior illumination, remote engine starting, and numerous cosmetic options for the interior and exterior.

Under the Hood
A 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the Outlander ES and SE, producing 166 horsepower in a vehicle weighing a minimum of 3,274 pounds. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) feeds the power to the front wheels, and includes Acceleration Control technology to make the best use of available power.

For the first time, Super AWC all-wheel drive is optional with the 4-cylinder engine in the Outlander SE. A driver-activated Eco driving mode is designed to help conserve fuel, and for vehicles with Super AWC, the Eco mode allows the Outlander to operate solely as a FWD vehicle to maximize gas mileage.

The Outlander GT is equipped with Super AWC as standard, and has a 224-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine under its hood. The CVT is swapped out for a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, both the 2014 Outlander ES and SE get 25 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg in combined driving when equipped with FWD. Add Super AWC, and the Outlander SE returns 24 mpg city/29 mpg highway for a combined driving rating of 26 mpg.

As might be expected, the Outlander GT burns more gas. Unexpectedly, the V-6 requires premium fuel. Ratings are 20 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg in combined driving.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not published crash-test ratings for the 2014 Outlander. In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Outlander earned a "Top Safety Pick Plus" rating, reflecting the SUV's "Good" rating in the tough new small overlap frontal-impact test. To date, the only other small SUV to match that performance is the 2014 Subaru Forester.

One reason for this performance, according to Mitsubishi, is the Outlander's Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body structure. It also has a standard knee air bag for the driver, and a new brake pedal recession feature designed to reduce leg injury in a collision.

The Outlander SE and GT are equipped with a reversing camera. Both can be optioned with a lane-departure warning system and an adaptive cruise control system that includes forward-collision mitigation (FCM) technology. With FCM, the system warns the driver of obstacles ahead and, if the driver fails to react, automatically applies the brakes.
