The Outlander is Mitsubishi's compact crossover SUV, available with front- or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD). The Outlander underwent an extensive redesign for the 2010 model year, and carries over to 2011 with only some minor changes to standard and optional features, plus slightly better gas mileage.

The 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander comes in four trim levels: ES, SE, XLS, and GT. A long list of options can bring the Outlander up to a high degree of luxury. The Outlander ES features 16-inch steel wheels, cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, roof rails, reclining rear seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry, and 6-speaker sound system. The Outlander SE features 18-inch wheels, fabric sports seats, keyless ignition, and other trim enhancements. The Outlander XLS steps up to a V-6 engine and adds automatic climate control, third-row seat, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Outlander GT trim adds xenon headlights, upgraded trim and pedals, and a Rockford Fosgate sound system. Various option packages are available at different trim levels, and can include a sunroof, hard-drive-based navigation system, leather upholstery, power driver's seat, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

The 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander ES and SE trims feature a 168-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, coupeed with a continuously variable transmission, that delivers 23 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with FWD, according to the EPA. The Outlander XLS and GT feature a 230-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine that employs a 6-speed automatic transmission and delivers 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway with FWD. All the Outlander's transmissions feature manual shifters. The AWD system offers three driving modes.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander include anti-lock brakes, stability control, active front head restraints, front- and side-impact air bags, side curtain air bags, seat belt pre-tensioners, an ignition-disabling device, and an intrusion-detection system. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Outlander highest-possible "Good" ratings in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests, and "Acceptable" for rear-impact protection and roof strength.

Starting MSRP for the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander is $21,995.
