Introduction
The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a 5-passenger small crossover model available in two trim levels with either front-wheel-drive (FWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability. All Mitsubishis are backed by a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Competitors include the Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Juke, and the Subaru Impreza.

Models and Features
In base ES form, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport offers up to 49.5 cu. ft. of cargo space and is adorned with 18-in. alloy wheels, LED taillights, heated mirrors, tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 140-watt sound system with 4 speakers. The upper-level SE trim level is upgraded with HID headlights, premium cloth upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and rain-sensing wipers. Top-of-the-line Outlander Sports also boast standard fog lights, satellite and HD Radio, rearview camera, push-button start, and a 6.1-in. touch-screen audio system.

Options and Packages
Mitsubishi offers a generous assortment of options for the 2014 Outlander Sport, some of which include a rear spoiler, aluminum interior trim, and a 7-in. touch-screen navigation system. Those items are available on both the ES and SE trim levels, but the most desirable upgrades are reserved for the latter. Among the highlights is a Touring package consisting of a panoramic tilt/slide moonroof, 710-watt sound system, leather upholstery, and a power driver's seat with 6-way adjustment.

Under the Hood
All versions of the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport are equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque, output that's managed by a 5-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters. FWD is the standard configuration, though buyers can opt for an AWD system featuring a 4-wheel-drive (4WD) lock button.

Fuel Economy
With EPA ratings of 24 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, FWD Outlander Sport models fitted with the CVT are the most efficient of the various configurations, though the advantage is negligible. In fact, the EPA suggests all variants will average 24 mpg around town, and even the AWD Outlander Sport is expected to return 29 mpg on the highway.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport received an overall rating of 4 (out of 5) stars. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Outlander Sport received an "Acceptable" rating for small overlap front-impact protection; the Outlander Sport was also named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute.

In terms of equipment, the 2014 Outlander Sport features 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, hill-start assist, and 7 air bags.
