Exterior Features
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a 5-passenger compact crossover SUV offered in ES and SE trim levels with front- or all-wheel drive (2WD or AWD). The Outlander Sport ES is equipped with heated exterior mirrors and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Interior Features
The Outlander Sport offers 21.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, unless the premium sound system has been added as a feature, in which case the subwoofer reduces the volume to 20.1 cubic feet. Fold the rear seat, and the SUV offers a maximum of 49.5 cubic feet of cargo room.

Standard equipment for the Outlander Sport ES includes Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The 4-speaker stereo is equipped with a CD/MP3 player and an auxiliary audio input jack.

The SE trim comes standard with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), automatic climate control, FAST-Key keyless entry and push-button ignition, upgraded stereo system, upgraded upholstery, heated front seats, automatic high-intensity discharge headlights, fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

Optional Features
Several option packages are available on both versions of the Outlander Sport. They include the Exterior package (LED running lights, large rear spoiler, aluminum fuel door); Interior package (aluminum and Piano Black trim); Protection package (mud guards, rear bumper protector, tailgate protector); All-Weather package (remote engine starting, mud guards, all-weather floor mats); and the Cargo package (cargo mat, cargo net, cargo shelf board). Dealers can also install a navigation system, front and rear park-assist sensors, LED interior lighting, and more.

The SE trim can also be optioned with a navigation system, bundled in a Navigation package with real-time traffic reporting and a reversing camera. This version is also offered with a Premium package containing a panoramic glass roof, LED cabin lighting, auto-dimming rearview mirror, reversing camera, and a 710-watt Rockford Fosgate Punch sound system with satellite radio and a CD changer.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 148 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 145 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the ES trim, delivering power to the front wheels. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional on the ES and standard on the SE, and both trims are equipped with a brake energy regeneration system that captures energy when the SUV is stopping, using it to recharge the battery.

Mitsubishi's All Wheel Control (AWC) all-wheel-drive system is optional on the Outlander Sport, continuously distributing power to the front and rear wheels, as needed, when the center console selector is in 4WD mode. A Lock setting produces equal power distribution as conditions warrant.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport are:

  • Outlander Sport 2WD with manual transmission: 24/31/27 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Outlander Sport 2WD with automatic transmission: 24/30/26 mpg
  • Outlander Sport 4WD with automatic transmission: 24/29/26 mpg

Additionally, the SUV has 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control system, hill-start assist, and a brake override system that is designed to make it impossible to accelerate if the brake pedal is depressed. The Outlander Sport SE trim level comes standard with rain-sensing wipers and, in conjunction with a navigation system or the Premium package, a reversing camera. Dealers can install optional rear park-assist sensors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2013 Outlander Sport a 4-star (out of 5) overall crash-test rating. As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2013 Outlander Sport.
