Overview

What's New for 2014:

  • All-new subcompact model
  • 3-cylinder engine
  • EPA-estimated to return up to 44 mpg on the highway
  • Standard iPod connection and optional Bluetooth connectivity

Introduction
The all-new front-wheel-drive (FWD) 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is a 5-passenger, 4-door subcompact model that uses a 3-cylinder engine to earn EPA ratings of up to 44 mpg. Two trim levels are offered, both backed by the company's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Competitors include the Chevrolet Spark, Ford Fiesta, Nissan Versa Note, Scion iQ, Smart Fortwo, and the Toyota Yaris.

Models and Features
Like other Mitsubishi models, the 2014 Mirage is available in base DE and more upscale ES trim levels. Among the standard features found on the former are 14-in. steel wheels, rear spoiler, power door locks with keyless entry, power windows and outside mirrors, and air conditioning. On top of that, the DE boasts a tilt steering wheel, 140-watt sound system with a USB port, and a split-folding rear seat.

For the Mirage ES, Mitsubishi adds fog lights, 14-in. alloy wheels, leather interior accents, push-button start, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Options and Packages
As is the case with many budget-oriented subcompact cars, the Mitsubishi Mirage's selection of options is limited, but buyers do have access to an available remote-start system, front and rear park-assist sensors, and a Navigation package comprised of a nav system and a rearview camera.

Under the Hood
In an effort to make the car as efficient as possible, Mitsubishi fits the 2014 Mirage with a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine that generates 74 horsepower and 74 lb.-ft. of torque. A standard 5-speed manual gearbox or optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) delivers output to the front wheels.

Fuel Economy
As noted, the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is all about getting the most out of a gallon of gasoline, as evidenced by EPA ratings reaching 37 mpg in the city, 44 mpg on the highway, and 40 mpg combined. That's what drivers can expect when working with the CVT; those who prefer the 5-speed stick-shift should see 34 mpg, 42 mpg, and 37 mpg, respectively.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage earned a "Poor" rating--the Institute's lowest--for small overlap front-impact protection. As this overview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage. All versions of the Mirage feature 7 air bags and anti-lock brakes (front disc/rear drum) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.
