Overview
Now in its fourth generation, Mitsubishi's stylish front-wheel-drive sport coupe was last reworked for the 2006 model year. The 2008 model is largely a carryover. Billed as an "affordable exotic," the 4-passenger, 2-door Eclipse coupe has reinforced unibody construction and a fully independent suspension. A sporty new Special Edition (SE V-6) hatchback coupe for 2008 includes a special aerodynamic body package and handling-enhancement features.

Four-cylinder SE coupes adopt 18-inch alloy wheels with 235/45R18 tires for 2008. GT coupes also get standard 18-inch wheels. On base GS coupes, alloy wheels hold 225/50VR17 tires. The SE V-6 includes Active Stability Control (ASC), which is not offered on other Eclipse models. Mitsubishi refers to its "aggressive street rally appearance" with the new chin spoiler, bold rear wing, alloy fuel door, and flashy body graphics. Sirius satellite radio now is included with the available Rockford-Fosgate premium audio system. All models gain a tire-pressure monitoring system for 2008.

Built on a 101.4-inch wheelbase, the Eclipse coupe is 179.7 inches long overall and stands 53.5 inches high. High-back front bucket seats include integrated, open head restraints that enhance rearward visibility. Interiors are covered in padded and textured materials to match the seat upholstery. An LCD display atop the center panel holds the radio, clock, and directional indicators. Gauges, knobs and switches are illuminated at night by ice-blue LED lamps. With rear seatbacks folded, Eclipse hatchbacks offer 15.7 cubic feet of luggage space. Eclipse coupes are built at Mitsubishi's plant in Normal, IL, alongside Eclipse Spyder convertibles. Both body styles share a similar structure and model lineup.

Model Lineup
For 2008, Mitsubishi Eclipse hatchback coupes come in four versions: GS and SE with 4-cylinder engines, plus SE V-6 and GT with V-6 power. All models are offered with either a manual or automatic transmission. GS coupes include air conditioning; a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel; cruise control; cloth upholstery; a height-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar adjustment; 50/50 split-folding rear seat; power doors and windows; power mirrors; remote keyless entry; and a 140-watt, 6-speaker CD/MP3 player. Also standard are variable-intermittent front wipers; intermittent rear wiper/washer; lighted visor mirrors; an engine immobilizer theft-deterrent system; and a rear spoiler. SE models add new aluminum scuff plates; leather upholstery; sunroof; Rockford Fosgate stereo with 6-CD/MP3 changer; steering-wheel radio controls; and an outside-temperature indicator. Also on SE coupes: an automatic day/night mirror; front chin spoiler; large rear wing; 18-inch Sword Silver finish alloy wheels; plus a rear cargo net, cargo cover, and wheel locks. The SE V-6 adds traction control; Active Stability Control; automatic climate control; heated power mirrors; and fog lamps. GT coupes include traction control; heated power mirrors; compass; outside-temperature indicator; fog lamps; and a strut tower bar for added rigidity. A Sun and Sound package is available for GS and GT coupes.

Powertrain
Standard in 2008 Mitsubishi Eclips GS and SE coupe models, the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine develops 160 hp and 160 lb.-ft. of torque. Beneath the hood of SE V-6 and GT coupes sits a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that generates 263 hp at 5750 rpm, and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard with 4-cylinder models, with 4-speed automatic optional. With V-6 power, a 6-speed manual gearbox is standard and a 5-speed automatic transmission is optional. Both automatic transmissions incorporate Sportronic control for manually-selected gear changes. The EPA gives the 4-cylinder Eclipse coupe fuel-economy estimates of 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway with a manual transmission, or 20 mpg city/26 mpg highway with automatic. With the V-6 engine, the Eclipse coupe gets estimates of 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway with manual shift and 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway with the automatic transmission. Premium-grade gasoline is recommended for the V-6 engine. Mitsubishi claims V-6 coupes can accelerate to 60 mph in a brisk 5.8 seconds.

Safety
All 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe models have seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags. All-disc brakes incorporate anti-lock braking and electronic brake-force distribution. GT models have larger, ventilated rear brake discs. A tire-pressure monitor and daytime running lights also are standard. The 2008 Eclipse coupe has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for either frontal or side impacts. In its crash-test program, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Eclipse Spyder convertible "Good" ratings for both frontal and side impacts, but the Eclipse coupe has not yet been tested.

Technology
Both 2008 Eclipse coupe engines incorporate Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) for improved efficiency across a broad engine-speed range, the manufacturer says. Active Stability Control, installed only on the new SE V-6 coupe, can help prevent skidding, the company adds. An available, 650-watt Rockford-Fosgate PUNCH audio system now includes Sirius satellite radio. The system uses 9 speakers, including a 10-inch subwoofer, with four sound field image settings (Normal, Stage, Live, and Hall). Digital Signal Processor has eight settings.
