Model Lineup
For 2008, consumers have a choice of Eclipse Spyder GS or GT models. Both feature a cloth power convertible top that tucks away under a flush tonneau in about 19 seconds, Mitsubishi says. The GS has a 2.4-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission; 17-inch alloy wheels; power windows and locks; air conditioning; cruise control; remote keyless entry; 6-way adjustable driver's seat with lumbar and 4-way adjustable front passenger seat; trunk/hatch spoiler; 4-wheel ABS; premium 650-watt, 9-speaker audio system; and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The GT adds the 3.8-liter V-6 engine and 6-speed manual transmission; 8-way adjustable (6-way power) driver's seat with lumbar; outside temperature and compass display; larger, ventilated rear disc brakes; and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Five option packages are available on the 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, one for GS, one for GT and three for either. The Deluxe Leather package (GS) includes heated front leather seats, heated power side-view mirrors, and center LCD screen. The Premium Sport package (GT) adds 8-way adjustable (6-power) driver's seat; silver wheel finish; aluminum scuff plate; alloy pedals; and automatic climate control. The Aero package contains front corner air dams, sport side sills, and rear wake modifier. The Accessory package has an alloy fuel door, wheel locks, and sport front floor mats. The Appearance package combines Aero and Accessory package items.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS is powered by a 2.4-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 162 hp at 6000 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. Power is transferred through a standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission with sequential manual shift control. The GT powerplant is a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that pumps out 260 hp at 5750 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. Power gets to the wheels via a standard 6-speed manual or optional 5-speed automatic transmission with sequential manual shift control. ABS is standard on both GS and GT, while only GT has traction control. Stability control is not available. EPA fuel economy is estimated at 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway for the 2.4-liter engine with manual or automatic transmission, while the 3.8-liter V-6 engine gets an estimated 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway (manual) and 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway (auto).

For 2008, all Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder models come standard with ABS and electronic brake-force distribution; anti-theft system with hood switch; engine immobilizer; daytime running lights; and traction control (GT). Other safety features include dual advanced dual-stage front air bags and front-seat-mounted side-impact air bags; 3-point safety belts for all occupants; and tubular steel side-guard door beams.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder has not been rated for occupant protection by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for any of the agency's crash or rollover tests.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder comes with a premium audio system as standard equipment. The 650-watt, 9-speaker (including 8-inch subwoofer, digital sound processing and speed-sensitive automatic volume) Rockford Fosgate 6-CD/MP3 playback capability audio system features dual auto equalization settings that cover top up/down settings. Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls are also included in GS and GT.
