Overview

What Changed for 2009:

  • Carryover model from 2008
  • VOGA option package available on Premier trim
Overview
There's very little change for the 2009 Mercury Sable, as the car is basically a carryover from 2008. A twin to the Ford Taurus, the Sable is available with front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive (AWD), and features a bit more upscale interior and specific exterior styling cues. Offered in base and Premier trim levels, the Sable is a full-size car with plenty of room for five adults and a huge trunk.

Model Lineup
For 2009, the Mercury Sable is available in base and Premier trim. Major standard equipment includes premium cloth seats; 6-way power driver's seat; 2-way power-adjustable and -folding front passenger's seat; power windows, mirrors and door locks; cruise control; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; auto-dimming rearview mirror; stereo with CD player and auxiliary input jack; and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Premier model adds 18-inch wheels; leather seats; heated front seats; 8-way power driver's seat; 4-way power passenger's seat; dual-zone automatic climate control; Bluetooth wireless capability; Sirius satellite radio; and a 6-disc CD player with MP3 playback and 8 speakers. The Sable Premier is newly offered with an optional VOGA package. Voga is a Spanish word meaning "fashionable and trend setting," and the Sable VOGA comes with cashmere leather seats and door trim inserts, a special color palette and unique accents.

Options available on the 2009 Sable in base trim include an Interior Comfort and Convenience package; moonroof; rear window sunshade; navigation system; Microsoft SYNC voice-activated communications and entertainment system; Sirius satellite radio; cargo management system; heated seats; reverse sensing system; and remote start (dealer-installed). Premier options include a wood trim package; the VOGA package; navigation system; adjustable pedals with memory; and chrome wheels.

Powertrain
All 2009 Mercury Sables come with the same engine-a 3.5-liter V-6 with 263 hp at 6250 rpm and 249 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm. EPA fuel economy is estimated at 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway (17 mpg city/24 mpg highway with AWD). In California and New England, the Sable meets Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II) standards.

The Sable also features electric power steering, 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, and a 4-wheel independent suspension.

Safety
The Mercury Sable is built on Volvo's P2 architecture, and thus benefits from many of the Swedish automaker's advanced safety technologies. Safety features include the Personal Safety System consisting of dual-stage advanced driver and front passenger air bags; front-seat pre-tensioners and energy-management retractors and sensors for seat belt usage, driver's seat position and crash severity, restraint control module and front-passenger sensing system; side-impact air bags; Safety Canopy with side curtain air bags for front/rear outboard passengers, rollover sensor and roll-fold technology; seat belt reminder system; child safety locks; and the Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) system. The Sable also has a standard tire-pressure monitor, traction control, AdvanceTrac electronic stability control and 4-wheel ABS.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Sable receives perfect 5-star ratings in frontal and side-impact crash testing. In the agency's rollover testing, the Sable earned a 4-star rating for both FWD and AWD models.

Technology
The 2009 Mercury Sable is available with a voice-activated navigation system; SYNC (co-developed by Ford and Microsoft), a customizable media system that allows the driver to integrate Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players with the car and operate them using voice commands; reverse sensing system; and Sirius satellite radio.
