Overview
The introduction of the Mercury Mariner in 2005 followed the introduction of the Mercury Mountaineer-a sport utility vehicle (SUV) designed for customers seeking a traditional SUV with 4-wheel-drive (4WD), a commanding seating position, towing ability, and cargo capacity. Completely redesigned for 2008, the all-new Mercury Mariner SUV features fresh sheetmetal; a revised interior; an updated comprehensive safety package; a quieter and more refined ride; and a choice of gasoline or hybrid powerplants.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Mercury Mariner is available in three different trims: Mariner, Mariner Premier, and Mariner Hybrid. Revisions to all models include extensive work to reduce NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels within the cabin. Laminated windshields, thicker interior carpeting, new windshield moldings, and low-profile windshield wipers are just some of the changes that make all 2008 Mariners 12 percent quieter on the highway, according to Mazda.

Standard premium cloth seats on all models include a 60/40-split bench seat with tip-fold-flat latch. Other standard interior amenities include air conditioning, power locks, power windows, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, and privacy glass. Standard audio features include an AM/FM MP3 and satellite-ready radio with single-CD player and audio input jack. A rear cargo light and 16-inch wheels are also standard.

Optional features include available Intelligent 4WD; premium leather seating surfaces; roof rack with crossbars; heated seats; and a 320-watt, 6-disc in-dash CD changer. A Class II trailer towing package, full-size spare tire and 17-inch wheels are also on the options list.

Powertrain
Three different powerplants are available in the 2008 Mercury Mariner. The standard engine is a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 153 hp and 152 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA fuel economy estimates 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway. An optional engine is a larger 3.0-liter V-6 engine rated at 200 hp and 193 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA fuel economy estimates for the V-6 are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway. Both engine choices are mated to a standard 4-speed automatic transaxle.

The hybrid-electric Mariner is powered by a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 133 hp and assisted by a 70-kWatt electric motor. EPA fuel economy estimates for the hybrid are 34 mpg city/27 mpg highway. (Note: most hybrid vehicles offer better fuel economy in city driving cycles.) A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard. Front-wheel drive is standard, with Mercury's 4WD system optional with all powerplants. Mercury Mariner models are covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile drivetrain and roadside assistance warranty.

Safety
The 2008 Mercury Mariner offers six standard air bags, including occupant-sensing driver and passenger frontal air bags, side air bags, and Mercury's Safety Canopy side-impact/rollover air curtains. Front seat belts are equipped with pre-tensioners to reduce belt slack instantly at impact. All rear outboard seats are equipped with the infant/child seat LATCH system. Dynamic stability control, roll stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system all are standard safety equipment on all Mariner models for 2008. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has crash-tested the 2008 Mercury Mariner. Frontal-impact ratings were 4-star driver/5-star passenger, while side-impact scores were 5-star front seat/5-star rear seat. The rollover rating was 3 stars for both 2WD and 4WD models.

Technology
All non-hybrid Mariner and Mariner Premier models offer standard AdvanceTrac traction control with RSC, an exclusive roll stability control and active safety system from Ford. Compared to typical electronic stability control systems with just one gyroscope, AdvanceTrac with RSC uses a second gyroscope to determine roll rate, and roll angle, approximately 150 times per second. If the system detects excessive roll, countermeasures such as individual wheel braking and engine power reduction are automatically implemented to help the driver bring the vehicle under control.
