Overview

What Changed for 2008:

  • Three new options packages: GS Comfort Appearance; GS Confidence; LS Travel
Overview
The Mercury Grand Marquis and its twin, the Ford Crown Victoria, are two of the oldest models still being produced for the U.S. market. However, the Grand Marquis continues to be a viable product for the Ford Motor Company. It remains popular among full-size sedan buyers; it's the only model in the segment in which a V-8 engine is standard; it's still rear-wheel drive; it has a large trunk; and it can comfortably seat six. It's also the best-selling Mercury model ever, with almost 3 million units sold since 1975, according to the company.

Model Lineup
Trim levels for the 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis are limited to the GS and up-level LS. Five packages are available for the Grand Marquis. The Palm Beach Edition is a carryover from 2007 and is available only on the LS model. It includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power heated exterior chrome-capped mirrors, and Cashmere leather seating with Palm Beach embroidery. Other features of the PB edition are side air bags,16-inch chrome wheels, exterior and interior PB badging, and use of satin appliqu on the interior. The LS Travel package includes a dual-media AM/FM/cassette/CD audio system and full-size spare tire/wheel. The GS Confidence package is only on the GS and includes power heated color-keyed sideview mirrors, fog lamps, and traction control. The Comfort Appearance package for the GS includes leather trim seats, power driver's seat, manual passenger seat, and 16-spoke painted aluminum wheels. The last package is the Smokers package that adds an ashtray and lighter element.

Powertrain
The standard 4.6-liter V-8 engine on the 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis-the only engine choice for both the GS and LS trims-is a flex-fuel engine that can run on gasoline, E85 ethanol, or any mixture thereof. The SOHC (single overhead cam) powerplant produces 224 hp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, and offers optional traction control. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock system (ABS) are standard. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the V-8 are 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway.

Safety
Standard safety features on the 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis include a full frame with hydroformed front rails and crossmembers. A tire-pressure-monitoring system is standard, and the GS offers optional seat-mounted side air bags for front-seat outboard occupants. This is the 13th straight year that the Grand Marquis has received a 5-star crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for both driver and front passenger, as well as 5 stars for rear-seat passengers when equipped with side air bags. The Grand Marquis also receives 5 stars for rollover-resistance from the NHTSA. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the Grand Marquis a "Good" rating in its frontal offset crash test.

Technology
Since the Mercury Grand Marquis has not had a major update since 2003, new technology features are not abundant. It's one of the few models that continues to offer a cassette player, and still employs a body-on-frame design that most other auto manufacturers use solely on truck models. Power seats, ABS, automatic headlights, and redundant audio controls on the steering wheel highlight the Grand Marquis' technology features.
