What's New for 2012:
- Crew model features additional seating
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a commercial work/cargo van, available in Europe since the 1990s, and now available in the U.S. The Sprinter is available in the basic 2500 series, or the heavy-duty 3500 series, and in three trims: Cargo, Crew, and Passenger. The Sprinter comes in two roof heights and three lengths, for a total selection of 10 configurations. The standard 2500 series has a 144-inch wheelbase, 232.5-inch total length, and 96.3-inch total height. The 2500 also comes with a 170-inch wheelbase, with total lengths of 273 or 289 inches; a 107.5-inch high roof is available with the longer wheelbase. The 3500 series is available only with the higher roof and features a heavier-duty suspension. Properly equipped, the Sprinter can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter interior can be configured in a variety of arrangements. The Cargo trim offers seating for 2 passengers and has the lowest step-in height in its class, according to Mercedes-Benz. The Crew trim seats 5 passengers, while the Passenger trim seats up to 12. Air conditioning and vinyl upholstery are standard.
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter offers various option packages, including several window packages that allow the fenestration to be extended to the second row or to the length of the vehicle. Several other packages include climate control, security, seating, suspension, lighting, heating, and safety features. Other available amenities include Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, daytime running lights, upgraded leatherette upholstery, roof rack rails, more elaborate grille work, and a two-stage sliding door.
Under the Hood
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter's standard engine is a 3.0-liter V-6 Bluetec diesel model rated at 188 horsepower and delivering 325 lb.-ft of torque. The Sprinter is fitted with rear-wheel drive and a 5-speed automatic transmission.
Official fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter are not available (the EPA does not calculate fuel economy for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR, over 8,500 pounds).
Anti-lock disc brakes are standard on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Safety options at various trim levels include driver and passenger thorax and window air bags, Parktronic technology, an anti-theft alarm, attach points for child's seat, and more.
In government tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Sprinter received 1 star (out of 5) for rollover protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not tested the 2012 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
