Overview

All new for 2011, the SLS AMG is Mercedes-Benz's high-performance sports car. It's a 2-seat, rear-wheel-drive luxury sports coupe, designed by Mercedes-Benz's high-performance division, AMG. Its design takes many of its cues from the classic long bonnet/short rear models of the 1950s. Very few cars can be compared to the SLS AMG in terms of features, performance, design, and degree of luxury, but its main competitors might include the Chevrolet Corvette, BMW M3, and Lamborghini Gallardo. Mercedes has announced a roadster version of the SLS AMG for the 2012 model year.

Standard features on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG include 19-inch cast aluminum wheels in front and 20-inch wheels in back, leather upholstery, sport seats, microfiber suede headliner, dual-zone automatic climate control, bi-xenon headlights, keyless entry and ignition, power heated seats, the COMAND interface, voice-commanded navigation system, a full range of power features, a premium sound system, and upwards-opening gullwing doors. Air vents are of brushed metal. Options include a wide range of distinctive exterior colors, custom-fitted cover, upgraded sound system, ultra-high-performance suspension and tires, leather/suede-wrapped steering wheel, and forged aluminum wheels. Curb weight is approximately 3600 pounds, according to the manufacturer.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG's power plant is a 563-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine coupeed with a 7-speed double-clutch automated manual transmission with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. It produces 479 lb.-ft. of torque and delivers 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. The driver can select a custom drive mode: choices include "Controlled Efficiency" for routine use, or the edgier, more responsive "Sport Plus" mode.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG include anti-lock brakes, electronic stability and traction control, side air bags, side curtain air bags, knee air bags, park assist with rearview camera, and Mercedes' mbrace telematics system.

Starting MSRP for the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is $183,000.
