Overview

A luxury rear-wheel-drive roadster with a retractable stowaway hardtop, the SLK-Class made its debut in the late 1990s as a competitor to the BMW Z3 and the Porsche Boxster, but with more emphasis on handling than on power. Its initials stand (in German) for Sporty, Light, and Compact. For 2011, the SLK adds a few features as standard equipment (including a rear spoiler) and features a few exterior cosmetic changes.

Trim levels on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, which refer to their respective engines, are the SLK300 and the SLK350. Standard features on the SLK300 include a hardtop that, according to the manufacturer, retracts in less than 25 seconds, 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, fog lights, and a 9-speaker sound system. The Sport package upgrades the SLK300 to 18-inch wheels and adds a sport suspension. Several other option packages are available, and can include the COMAND electronics interface, bi-xenon headlights, hard-drive-based navigation system, and sophisticated heating functions. Dual-zone automatic climate control is a stand-alone option; so are upgraded upholstery, a premium sound system, and various interior accents.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK300 features a 228-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine coupeed with a 6-speed manual or an optional 7-speed automatic transmission. It delivers 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway with automatic transmission, according to the EPA. The SLK350 features a 300-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine and the 7-speed automatic transmission; it delivers 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Standard safety features on the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class include anti-lock brakes, electronic stability and traction control, side air bags, knee air bags, and Mercedes-Benz's mbrace telematics system.
