Overview

What Changed for 2008:

  • New "Edition 10" anniversary model
Overview
German luxury vehicle maker Mercedes-Benz launched its compact, 2-seat roadster, the SLK, as a 1998 model. Among the car's key features were its remarkable design and a hardtop that folded itself under the trunk lid at the touch of a button. The car entered its second generation in 2004 and bore direct design cues from the Mercedes-powered McLaren Formula One racecar. The 2008 production run will be brief because the greatly updated 2009 SLK is scheduled for launch in April 2008. The SLK comes with a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty that includes 24-hour roadside assistance.

Model Lineup
Only 700 of the "Edition 10" anniversary SLK cars will be produced. The car is designed to celebrate the SLK's 10th anniversary on the American automotive market. The "Edition 10" is available on either the SLK280 or SLK350, and includes 17-inch "chrome-shadow" wheels; tinted tail lamps; red stitching on black leather seats; Mercedes' Airscarf heating package; a 7-speed automatic transmission; and Edition 10 badges. The SLK280 and SLK350 come with a retractable hardtop; leather upholstery; in-dash CD player as part of a 9-speaker audio system; 3-spoke and leather-covered steering wheel with multi-function controls; a tilt-and-telescoping steering column; 8-way manual sport seats; dual-zone climate control; cruise control; remote locks; power windows; heated exterior mirrors; intermittent windshield wipers; and dual cupholders.

The SLK55 AMG, a vehicle specially crafted by Mercedes' in-house high-performance group, adds AMG-design premium leather, Sirius satellite radio, power-adjustable steering column, power seats with 3-position memory, remote operation of the hardtop with the Smart Key, heated windshield washer nozzles, garage door opener and AMG badges.

Powertrain
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK280 is powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 engine that pumps out 228 hp and comes standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox. A 6-speed automatic transmission is available. The EPA rates the car at 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway with the manual transmission and 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway with the automatic.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK350 carries a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that provides 268 hp that goes to the rear wheels through a standard 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition to having more power, the SLK350 has larger brakes, wheels and tires than the SLK280. The EPA fuel economy ratings are 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG comes with a 5.5-liter V-8 engine that produces 355 hp. The engine also provides 376 lb.-ft. of torque. With a 7-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission, the car is capable of sprinting from a standing start to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, the maker claims. The SLK55 AMG is a high-performance vehicle EPA-rated at 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway.

The AMG version of the SLK comes with specially tuned suspension, 13.6-inch front brakes inside 18-inch wheels wrapped by high-performance tires. The car also gets special aerodynamic bodywork and a sport exhaust system.

Safety
All 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK models come with anti-lock brakes with brake assist and anti-skid, anti-spin Electronic Stability Program. They also have dual integrated roll bars, front and knee air bags and side air bags designed to protect both the torso and head. Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash tested the 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK.

Technology
Airscarf is Mercedes' optional technology designed to extend the open-air driving season into cooler months. It builds a neck-level heating system into the seatbacks and blows warm air from the head restraints. The system is designed to automatically maintain the warm airflow as vehicle speed changes.
