What's New
The SLK-Class experiences only minor changes for the 2007 model year. However, there is an enhanced AMG Sport package option from Mercedes' in-house customization and racing department, as well as a new appearance package option for the SLK280 and SLK350.

OverviewGerman luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz introduced its SLK compact two-seat roadster in 1997 as a 1998 model and for 2004 launched an all-new, second-generation model. The second generation carries design cues directly from McLaren's Mercedes-powered Formula One Grand Prix racing program, including an arrow-shaped nose and tapered silhouette. The SLK has a retracting hard top that folds itself beneath the rear deck lid at the touch of a button.

Standard equipment on the SLK includes leather upholstery, 8-way manually adjusted seats, an in-dash CD player, dual-zone climate controls, cruise control, power windows, heated windshield washers, fog lamps, electronic stability control, side and knee air bags, and 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock technology. Various optional equipment also is available, including a navigation system and satellite radio. For 2007, SLK280 and SLK350 models also can be equipped with special appearance packages that include special exterior colors and unique interior trim.

The SLK is available in three models: SLK280, SLK350, and high-performance SLK55 AMG. The SLK280 carries a 228-hp, 3.0-liter V-6. The SLK350 gets a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6. The AMG model has a 355-hp, hand-built 5.5-liter V-8. In addition, the SLK350 rides on 17-inch wheels and is equipped with bigger brakes. The SLK55 AMG is equipped with 18-inch wheels wrapped by high-performance tires. This version also gets even larger brakes and a sport-tuned suspension designed to deal with the added dynamic forces generated by the high-powered V-8 engine.

The Competition
The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class competes in the Compact Premium Sporty segment, which consists of eight models. Buyers in this segment look for exterior styling, performance, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM

The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report, SM were the Nissan 350Z (24,635 units sold), the now-discontinued Acura RSX (16,996), and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class (16,415). The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class sold 10,410 units in 2006, a decrease of 7.7 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Compact Premium Sporty segment include the BMW Z4, Porsche Cayman, Honda S2000, and Porsche Boxster. Joining the segment in 2007 is the Volvo C70.
